Mantis meets cricket, with predictable results...(pic)

My blog today features a series of photos of my new European mantis (Mantis religiosa) feeding on a domestic cricket. I hadn’t kept a mantid for many years and had forgotten just how interesting they are. It is fascinating how incredibly efficient and fast they are at consuming a good sized...

Shade cloth value of insect screen?

I'm finding this question surprisingly difficult to Google answers for. If regular old insect screen were shade cloth, what would be its shade value? I know someone in Florida with one of those ubiquitous screened porches (even the "roof" is screen) and I'm wondering how a nepenthes would do in...

    Light windows for CPBobby

I'm up rather late (or super early now), and I spotted an unanswered question in the chat box by CPBobby about light windows. Here is a quick grab off my mobile Photobucket, showing a Sarracenia leucophylla x minor cross. Both of these species have light windows, AKA fenestrations, as do S...

White box photographs of Extatosoma tiaratum

I decided to try something a little different yesterday. I’ve noticed that it has become quite trendy for entomologists to photograph insect specimens using a white box, so I decided to give it a shot (so to speak). It took me less than 5 minutes to put together the white box that I used to take...

    Pests!

I have some kind of tiny grey insect living inthe moss in all the plants in my terrarium, i have no idea what they are and they are too small and fast to get a picture of. I read that you can submerge the pots and drown the pests, they definitely dont fly so i think it might work but i wanted to...

    Greetings from the Gulf

Hi, new grower here(no surprise) from the gulf coast of Texas, where its either hot or raining. Not much In between, weather wise. Like most when I was young I owned a small typical VFT. Recently I've gotten back Into the hobby when I officially declared wwr on the flying insect invaders that...

    Giant Australian stick bug

Here's some pics of a Giant Prickly Stick Insect, Extatosoma tiaratum. I think it's a female. She is not mine, she's on loan from somebody. I think she looks like something you would see in Mad Max or some post apocalyptic movie :D Higher resolution versions can be found on my flickr page.

side benefit to cp: seems they attract different kinds of insects one isn't used to

With the exception of my nepenthes and small cp's that are either infants or infirmed; I have them all on the front porch...consisting of sundews, dionaea and sarracenia. Which if i had to guess i would say the sarracenia seem to attract the most insects. I have seem some strange looking bugs...

How do I 'de-bug' a moss covered rock?

Bit of a strange question I guess, but I have a rock which is covered with moss and I would like to try growing an epiphytic Utricularia on it. Before doing so though, I would like to make sure that it is insect free, so does anyone have an ideas on how I would achieve this?

    FYI Springtail control

I had some springtails in my CP pots, although they may be a food source, but decided to get rid of them as i was told by an entomologist that they feed on roots. Also my U. longifolia wasn't looking too healthy and I suspect the springtails had something to do with it. Found out by chance...

    No Pest Strips

Have any of you ever used No Pest Strips to control insects with your plants ? Do they work well ? I was always afraid to use them because I always had tarantulas, roaches, stick insects and several kinds of feeder insect cultures around. I'm now "pet bug" free and was thinking of hanging a few...

    Insider's Insight: Please Critique/Correct/Add To!

Beyond Beginner's Information: Insider's Insight This was originally written for my friend whose interest is piqued in Carnivorous Plants. I've worked very hard on this, but I don't doubt that perhaps I've forgotten anything meaningful or gotten something wrong. Please correct, or add other...

    Parables of the Sundew, 1873

I came across this very interesting letter while researching Drosera that quite frankly makes me smile. It's a publication from 1873 which compares the attractive dew of the Sundew to the temptations of sin. Whether you be a religious man, or irreligious, it's still worth a read...
