I'm an undergrad student in horticulture at NCSU and I've started a few research projects. The first involves mutagenesis of Sarracenia. Basically I am using cobalt-60 radiation from a nuclear reactor, colchicine, and oryzalin (Surflan) to induce mutagenesis in seeds of 10 species of Sarracenia...
While I like my Nikon for point and shoot, I couldn't readily control depth of field and shutter speed as all these things are all done automatically for you. The first picture illustrates the Nikon camera. Sometimes I have to trick it by locking focus and then move closer or further away. The...
I had some springtails in my CP pots, although they may be a food source, but decided to get rid of them as i was told by an entomologist that they feed on roots. Also my U. longifolia wasn't looking too healthy and I suspect the springtails had something to do with it.
Found out by chance...
Have any of you ever used No Pest Strips to control insects with your plants ? Do they work well ? I was always afraid to use them because I always had tarantulas, roaches, stick insects and several kinds of feeder insect cultures around. I'm now "pet bug" free and was thinking of hanging a few...
It's been a while since I've been around here. I enjoyed dabbling in CPs in the past, throughout the 2000-2007 area, but a combination of economics and my cats forced me to abandon the hobby for a while. I gave my last few CPs to a budding enthusiast some years back. I've been itching to...
I was starting up the computer, business as usual. There was some error message and I ignored it. I logged on and saw that the screen had shrunk a bit. so I went to the control panel and attempted to expand the pixels, thinking maybe that 'Thanel changed the settings. I dragged the bar over a...
I was inspired by Av's thread about his heli set up, particularly the self watering system. So this weekend I started thinking about how to incorporate it into a glass terrarium. So this is a spare 10g aquarium I had laying around.
I was a little worried about cutting holes in the glass for...
I am dealing with what I suppose is a good problem to have... my pings are out of control. Every species has 2-4 full grown specimens, and they flower 24/7. Upkeep is getting too much and I prefer a single, mature plant anyway.
Is there a way to discourage division?
The entire house is full of these tiny flies (not fruit flies) and we are having a hard time getting rid of them. They are attracted to light, so I put my taller 'dews under the kitchen table light, and over night they caught tons of flies! it worked very well!
Here are some pics, sorry for...
So I've been doing some thinking after talking to the GrowLab kids. My plants have started growing so much better since I started growing them in water (raised humidity). Well, I'm still getting burnt LFS so I wanted to dampen the light a bit. Plus I wanted to adopt a better growing style...
I'm looking for species that don't get too big or at least do not vine out of control.
Conditions are around 70-80F during the day and drop a bit at night then. Not really strict HL or LL I guess? My ventricosa does well if that helps give an idea.
Anyways, I don't have much space at the...
Soylent Green references aside I imagine certain conspiracy theorists will go wild over this:
Next-Generation Gelatin Could be Derived from Humans Instead of Animals
Something to reflect on over your lunch break today: Scientists are developing a new approach for producing human-derived...
Over the last week or so, something has been chewing holes into my Sarracenia and I'm not sure what it is or what to use to control it. Today I woke up to find a hole in each of my Sarracenia Leucophylla's pitchers and one in its newly emerging pitcher. Strangely, this was the only plant of four...
Oh dear lord.. it's a LOT bigger than I remember. Need to find a better spot for it, kind of an eye sore at the moment. But weighing in at 700Lbs.. I'm not in a big hurry to try and move it again. I see there's the same model on eBay for $850. So the $30 I payed is sitting fine by me...
Hey folks,
I know at least of few of you are into planted tanks. Hopefully I can get second+ opinions on the lighting for a tank I'm rebuilding for my fiance. Her 20gallon long is a bit overgrown and over populated. Luckily, I have some supplies stored here to do a relatively easy upgrade for...
Alright.. *rubbing hands together* where to begin. lol.
I've been doing research for the past couple weeks on what I want to do, or what I NEED to do.
My goal is to grow a bit of everything, including Lowland Neps, Cephs and Helis. I've asked around, done a TON of reading, and i'm still...
For years I have been growing my Sarracenia in tubs owing to the fact that I moved a lot. Finally I bought a house in Corvallis, Oregon and decided to build my dream bog. I started in April of 2010, and like all good DIY projects, it took way longer than I ever expected. By the time I built the...
Well, somehow in the last couple of weeks, an old nemesis that i rid myself of a couple of years ago has resurfaced.. Spider mites, and in my beloved tank here at my house (thankfully not the major chunk of plants back at my parents) but either way, there are some rather rare and irreplaceable...
Guess I kinda missed the ball here a while ago when I joined and never introduced myself, but just dove right in.
I grew up in Vermont and daydreamed about plants growing up... and had nice jungles in my room too with all the 'regulars' you find at Home Depot like crotons and dracaena and...
Basically I'm in need of a fan timer with a temperature sensor that can switch on/off an exhaust fan once certain temps are reached. Does such a product exist?
