My favorite, is Pheidole in the New World, A dominant, Hyperdeverse Ant Genus By E. O. Wilson!
And The encyclopedia of Insects by Vincent H, Resh, Ring T. Carde!
and
The Bees of The World Second Edition by Charles D. Michener!
I got 3 months of...
I've been reading these forums for some time, and figured I may as well join! I had attempted to grow CP's, specifically VFT's and Sarracenia's in the past, but without success. I finally learned that this was due to me trying to grow them indoors, and keeping them under plastic domes, and...
6/25/07: I have caught alot of tetramorium this year and I am going to try and experiment a little. I have 2 tubes of 1 queen each, one boosted, I have 2 tubes of 2 queens each, one boosted, and I have 2 tubes with 3 queens each, one boosted. I am going to keep there progress on here to see...
Hi all! :-O
Well, i have a terrarium full of antplants, i.e. dischidias, hydnophytums, and N. bicalcarata, all which thriving, and up until recently, had no ants. I just realized a newly introduced pot has ants in it! woo-hoo!
So, i have a few questions.
I made a mini shelter for the ants to...
My sarracenia is kinda weird, I just got him and he was stuffed with ants. It has been about two weeks, and the ant numbers have died down a bit, but there are stil tons in there. And now it is Oct. 3rd, and the ends are turning brown. What the heck do I do?!?!???? ??? ???
I caught these Ants this summer, fun little ants. My favorite is the Ponera which I just noticed had a worker eclose, a cute little callow to say the least, I don't know how long ill be able to keep them I was collecting her with the intent of putting her in alcohol, but I just couldn't, so ill...
How did this happen? I noticed a smallish ant crawling on a pot earlier today of my N. ventricosa 'red' which decided to put out pitchers barely bigger than an inch (one is almost twice the size of the others though, still developing) now a dozen ants somehow got in a second story closed window...
Excerpt from For Love of Insects, Harvard press 2003, by Thomas Eisner , p. 109-113
If you like CP’s and bugs, you’ll enjoy this
From my book collection.
If Ants had brains they would know putting their nest up under a large S. minor 'okee giant' probably isn't the best spot.
I just came home from a cabin watching ants suicidal drop into S. purpurea ssp. venosa var. burkii and S. minor 'okee giant' they were all marching along and falling in at...
...for sex....sorta.
My purp is flowering, and I had the idea to go to a bog and collect some pollen for it, just to see how the babies would end up, being as the gene pools would be very different.
Here's just some pics from the excursion:
Pretty much what the scenery was like on the trail...
Alright so the aphids are back and they’re not alone. The ants and aphids are taking full advantage of their symbiotic relationship on my VFTs. I have tried spraying them off, drowning them; I even moved the fortress away from the ant trial it was neighboring, but no luck! New traps are now...
Short story...
I went outside, checked my S. leucophylla x (flava x leucophylla) which is very beautiful. I looked inside and found a average sized looking house fly under the fluid (which I stuck a thin little piece of stem I found under a large bush which was very smooth and thin, I stuck it...
My N.ventricosa 'red' got knocked off it's shelf and all of it's pitcher water came off, so I replaced the water. But I also noticed that ants are walking in the waxy zone, like it's nothing, so I have to blow the ants inside :-)) . Is the pitcher still effective? I don't want those ants...
I was just outside looking for ants (heh heh....), and I heard this lil woodpecker in our old dead-ish tree pecking at it. I had my camera with me, so I quickly took some pics (which explains the bad quality, I took them as fast as I could).
Anyone know what kind it is...
What food is best for VFTs?
What bugs do you use?
Can you feed them spiders? What about ants? Those would probably be easiest for me. Are crickets good food?
Ok, so after contemplating for a couple of days on wether i should start an ant colony or get a mantid, i've decided to go for the ants. Now i just have to figure out where i can get a proper enviornment for them. I've done a bit of googlin, but it mostly shows the "kiddy farms". Most likely i'm...
It is the eve of my "college" visit, its more like a tour of the school. But its a visit none the less, this school has two things i am very interested it.
Biological sciences
Photography
I know that through out my life I can do photography, as a kinda hobby, just like my mycology experiences...
