Hi all,
I should have perceived that there was a problem earlier with the old leaves of the VFT dying off so quickly. Today, I went to check the plant and here are the symptoms:
1. There are white/cream dots under the leaves and on the traps.
2. I tried to rub these off and they do not come...
By an army of red fire ants! I've been in Florida for the past 6 weeks and I was walking my friends dog and stepped on an ant hill. I didn't notice and just stood there for about a minute. Next thing I know, I feel this horrible burning feeling on my foot. I look down and there are about 100 red...
One of my N. x edinensis' pitchers have caught so much ants that it has exceeded the water line. There's so much ants that any new ant that enters the trap is just walking over dead ant corpses. Is it ok to add some water or will the pitcher produce water or fluid or whatever that thing is. The...
Terro ant killer is the best ant killer. All I did is place a few drops in the ant path and in a day or two they will be gone. This stuff is like gold. Don’t get me wrong my nepenthes love having all the ants in their pitchers. But I hate ants. I flushed the Queen out and feed her to my D...
It is the oddest thing. The insides are turning to liquid, but the root systems are fine. I cut one open and found a tunnel, but nothing at the end of it, but the healthy, solid root. This is taking all of my barrels, one after another. I just lost a very nice ueblemania pectinifera. I have...
There once was a grower named Pookie
He was strange and a little hookie
His strange little plants
ate all the ants
and were in movies that were spookie
Honestly, my husband and I were totally baffled when we found a leaf closed with some bulging 'bug' inside. I thought he fed the plant while he thought I fed the plant. It turned out that two ants wondered their way in, at the same time, and got caught.
Err...Do ants mate like that??
Recently my neps expect for the hanging basket got a few aphids on them, nothing serious....yet. But I noticed this about 2 days ago and just ignored it, because i thought it was just some insect. After looking at GIS, I found out that they were aphids, I grow my cps outside, so I found the...
I have tried feeding my capensis several ants over the last few days and the ants seem intelligent/strong enough to escape from the tenticals everytime. Once an ant was stuck for about 5 hrs then when I came back and checked the ant was gone so I'm assuming it escaped also. What is the best type...
i noticed something weird when i threw my young N. ventricosa outside for a snack today... even though it didn't appear to catch anything, it looked like the goo-secreting glands went into overdrive (yay scientific terminology). there was juice streaming down the sides of several pitchers, even...
To my horror today, I found two of my rafflesiana squat red pitchers playing host to about 6 mosquitoe larva each. In my haste to get rid of them, I poured the larvae out...I should have collected and identified them first (or maybe feed them to my bettas!) Sorry I cant describe what sp. of...
Hey all,
Had to throw out a photo of N. jacquelineae with a pile of ants it has been dining on. Kind of hard to see, but it loves 'em! Also updated the photo page as well. Here's the link to the jac page: Nepenths jacquelineae
Hope you all enjoy the insect carnage and new photos.
Good growin'...
Hey guys, I was just thinking why don't we list our recipes for killing aphids and other bugs that attack our plants here. I'll go first.
1part coffee-1 tablespoon(I've read the caffeine will kill aphids and other pests)
1part dishwashing handsoap-1 tablespoon like ajax or palmolive(I've read...
Hey All,
It seems that I am constantly battling mealy bug infestation with my Sarracenias, but not with my Nepenthes. Both genuses of plants feed primarily on ants. Ants are known "farmers" of mealybug and scale because they are attracted to the honeydew produced by these pests, and they move...
This year I decided to let my vfts flower for the first time so I could hopefully collect seed. Anyways I was out at the bog garden pollinating them when I saw a fly land on the lip of a S. Rubra hybrid and I watched him for a few seconds and it appeared as if he just dived in!. There was no...
When I moved into the (current) house the entire yard was ST. Augustine Grass, which is highly invasive (although not classified) and my most hated weed. Another problem is this grass is a favorite or rather has a symbiotic relationship with Fire Ants. So after 2.5 years of toil I finnally have...
Now that summer is getting close, the bug and slug problem will be booming soon. What home cures and remedies do you use?
For slugs, I make that old fashioned corn meal and pennies mixed with water. (hint, make the water solution green-blue first by adding a little salt to the water before...
Can I use malathion safely on neps? I'm asking about the neps, I know the risks to me. I think I've used it on sarracenia and orchids, but don't remember ever spraying anything to my neps in the last 6 years.
Some ants appered on my terrarium some days ago and you know what that means ... some...
