I was just trying to remove a dead leaf. Attached to it and obviously just below the media surface was a tuber:

my alpina grow in an open topped tank on one of my shelves.......i water them bout once a week, the water completely evaporates but the bottom is rarely dry

I got my first mud-loving utrics today that I call (lovingly) "pond scum": tricolor, praelonga, tridentata and sandersonii all growing in basically dixie cups with drainage holes.
