Does anyone have this cat (Farlowella acus). I understand that it's a good algae eater but picky and non-competitive feeder. Tougher than otos? I also read conflicting reports of size (anywhere from 7 to 10 inches).
Question for our tropical fish enthusiasts
It has been suggested to me that this is Black Beard Algae any 2nd opnions and any one know how I should get rid of it?
I had a little bit of a long hair like algae problem a year back I got a couple of Rose barbs and a flying fox (might not be 100...

Hi all,
I've had fish one kind or another for yrs. and never had a planted tank. I lost my Severum a while back and have decided to try some plants.
Some plants from the lake got tangled around our peddle boat on the under side. So I decided to give them a try. I soaked them in bleach...
I seem to have really bad luck growing any of the Drosera in the petiolaris complex. I live in South Florida...so my conditions are right. I grow them in full sun and sit them in trays of water. Anyone have any pointers? I notice that they tend to get algae on the surface of the soil more than...

My mom and I are wanting to set up a pond at our house next spring. I would like to be able to put CPs next to it and possibly in it. We would also like to be able to put fish in it. The problem is, if we put CPs next to/in it they'll need lotsa sun and one of our friends who also has a pond...
Hello all,
A few weeks ago, I noticed that the soil in my S. leucophylla's pot was looking pretty dry even though the watering tray had plenty of water in it. I took the pot out of the tray and noticed that algae had done a nice job of sealing up the drainage holes! I took a Phillips...
Hi guys,
I guess this can apply to more than just sundews. This has never bothered me before when I grew carnivores in a large terrarium or outside, but now that I'm growing them in pots, algae seems to creep up periodically on the surface of the medium. What do you guys do? I've just been...
Here are some pics and a short explanation of what your seeing. This is as far as I have gotten in 3 years on this project, and most of it within the last few months. (mostly due to lack of time since I work around 70 to 80 hours a week)
This is the tank itself. pay no attention to the clutter...
I've been noticing practically ever since I put my U. gibba into its little bowl that there is little bits of fluffy sorta white/gray stuff that settles on the sides of the glass, and then eventually falls to the bottom of the bowl. A bit even seems to "grow" on my plant, yet my plant is still...
I usually wash my sphagnum peat moss before using, but not always..........
I was out of sphagnum peat moss so I went and bought some by Scotts.
I thought; lets have a bit of an experiment. Since I have a TDS meter lets see if washing the sphagnum peat moss will make a difference.
I took 12.8...
I've had U. stygia & macrohyza outside since the late spring and they have of course spread. By late summer I was dealing with some algae and picked as much as I could off. Then I split up live LFS in two trays and placed the Utrics on top. Ever since then, a summer became fall, it appears that...
Algae are among the world's premier plants. Scientists never expected to find an alga that feeds like a Venus flytrap. So biologists were surprised to discover that a common type of lake alga not only feeds itself through photosynthesis, it also eats bacteria.
Scientists studied the alga's...
Hey guys I've been trying to grow live sphagnum from the dead stuff for a couple of months and i'm not sure if I've done it. I'll let you decide:
It's either the real stuff or algae let me know what you think

Well, I've finally gotten over my algae hatred and learned to ignore most of it. Now, though, I've noticed the begininngs of a white powdery substance apparently growing in a couple of my pots. On the soil only, not the leaves. I suspect it is a fungus. I don't wish to harm my CPs, and I am...
I've had a couple of species of aquatic Utrics outside in trays and have been noticing algae building up on the Utrics. Anybody know how to deal with that?
Hey s'porers,
I wanna ask, do u guys use pure water or tap water. I've been usuing tap water from the farrer road area for awhile now, and i suspect that it might be the problem for some plant failures.
What are your experiences with tap water? Is there a way to obtain pure water cheaply...
