For those who don't know the story, this is an orchid that Darwin saw in Madagascar (well, maybe not this exact one, but something like it). The flower has a long, slim tube that sticks out the back of it and hangs down (yellowish green in this photo), and has nectar at the end of it. Darwin...
I was taking some pics of my VFT today, and I noticed along the outer edges of the traps bits of liquid. I saw in a documentary that this is nectar that the plant uses to attract insects. Does this indicate a healthy plant?

N. emmarene (khasiana x ventricosa; aka N."Savannah Rose")
N. mirabilis - hungry pitcher. That's nectar produced by the pitcher on the peristome.
N. tobaica x thorelli - notice the larger newer pitcher. It happened after fertiliser was added.
N. gracilis - local maroon. Same effect...

Hi all,
on my recent trip to Lundu,a town 45 mins drive from Bau,and driving past the Gading National Park(the place to see Rafflesia(a parastic plant of the world's biggest flower) i took a road leading to an isolated abandon logging road.Reaching an open flat land with no trees not typical...
During the summer holiday period I visited Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah. Naturally, like any Nepenthes enthusiast would, I decided to venture into the jungle in search of these insectivorous wonders. Here I will post selected photographs from the trip.
I will make regular updates with new...
I was outside today admiring my Sarracenias on one of the hundred and fifty trips I made outside to admire my Sarracenias today.
I happened to brush against a pitcher, a purpurea...and these danged earwigs came running up and out of it! What's up with that? I thought being in a pitcher was sure...
The Marsh Pitcher Plants
(Heliamphora sp.)
By Alex Dietrick
From the sandstone plateaus in Venezuela and Guyana, come a fascinating genus of carnivorous plants. South America’s only pitcher plant, Heliamphora is very primitive, but elegant in design. The trap seems to consist of...
I was looking out at my plants right before supper and saw this big bumblebee eating the nectar from a large pitcher on my Sarracenia leucophylla "red". I thought I'm going to go get my camera, but he will be gone by the time I get back. Well he was still there, just not on the large pitcher...
This year I decided to let my vfts flower for the first time so I could hopefully collect seed. Anyways I was out at the bog garden pollinating them when I saw a fly land on the lip of a S. Rubra hybrid and I watched him for a few seconds and it appeared as if he just dived in!. There was no...
When I moved into the (current) house the entire yard was ST. Augustine Grass, which is highly invasive (although not classified) and my most hated weed. Another problem is this grass is a favorite or rather has a symbiotic relationship with Fire Ants. So after 2.5 years of toil I finnally have...
Hi everybody,
Knowing how nectar glands - and how they are scattered on the lid underside surface - are one of the ways to identify Nepenthes species, I tried to see the glands of N. smilesii (clone from Phu Kradung) and N. viking (clone from Ao Panga) with my microscope. I wanted to make a...
My Aristolochia is going crazy with flowers. Since they looked very similar to the pitchers of N. lowii (even though N. aristolochioides is named after this genus) I decided to half one. This brought me to this set of conclusions.
But first a brief discription of the flower. The flower has a...
I purchased two Heliamphora hybrids about 5 months ago. They are growing outdoors in Honolulu in partial shade under the same conditions as some lowland/intermediate Nepenthes. One is H. heterodoxa x minor, and the other is H. heterodoxa x ionasii. Both are small plants with pitchers about 2...
