    Water

I was reading on another site that you can let tap water sit out for around 48 hours and then it would be ok to water VFTs with, but still not as good as distilled water. Is that true? It seems a little odd to me. Oh and another. How exactly do you acclimate VFTs to the outdoors? Wouldn't they...

Nepenthes bicalcarata growers in the tropics

Hello everyone! I've been having problems growing N bicalcarata over here in Puerto Rico since I started growing Nepenthes plants back in 2001. I'd like to know what experiences tropical growers have had with this plant growing it outside to see if I can finally figure out what I'm doing wrong...

    Outdoor RO Unit?

Does anyone use and outdoor RO unit for greenhouses/bog gardens. I'm interested in purchasing an RO unit for my outdoor/indoor plants. I'm looking for any kind of RO Unit that will attach to my outdoor spicket. Any ideas? I've used tap (90 to 100ppm) on my CPs for a long time with no problem...

    Cephalotus Dormancy

This is just a general little poll. :) What are your thoughts on giving Cephalotus a small dormancy like it experiences in the wild? In the wild, it apparently goes through light frosts and a chilly winter, where it stops growth or slows down. In Wisconsin, in the windowsill I grow it in, lows...

    VFT specific questions

First of all hello all! I have a venus flytrap that I recently purchased at a garden store. It isn't in the best quality and the leaves on the trap are long. However, there is a bit of red coloration in there. It is in a small pot and it had a plastic cover over it that i took off. I have...

    Thoughts on over potting Neps

So, for some time now I have been using tap root pots (designed for trees) to pot my Neps in. Had a number of people ask about them a while back when I posted pics of my Neps in the windows here in the lab. And among that number were a couple who told me it was pointless to be using the tap root...

    Water question

I got my new tds meter today and went around testing some water. My tap is about 170ppm and after it goes through the britta filter it goes down to about 90ppm. I know it's still high but would it ok for neps that dry out faster by the window?

    Odds and Ends

My first N. northiana pitcher! I have never been more proud of any other pitcher than this very ordinary-looking juvenile one. Well, perhaps this species can be taken off the "difficult-to-grow" list. This N. rafflesiana 'alata' is growing in pure perlite with tap water. It was a cutting left...

    Humidifiers - type of water?

I have a couple new venus fly traps and on some days I'm going to need to turn on a humidifier to maintain its desired humidity. They require distilled or reverse-osmosis purified water - but, can I use tap water in the humidifier, or do I actually need to get purified/distilled water for that...

    Increasing Humidity

Now that Spring is here I intend to leave my VFTS outside during the day. Currently, I'm placing them next to a fountain in my yard full of rocks. My VFTS are right above the water full of rocks and not touching anything. My questions is, is this a good idea for increasing humidity outside and...
