Last week my husband took a close look at my rain barrel and came up with semi self cleaning idea for it. The barrel is up on a stand and has a spigot that is as close to the bottom as he could put it. He attached a hose to the spigot and placed a clamp so that the hose end is held about two...
My oldest boy is almost 9 and wants either a lizard or a frog. Originally a snake was in his plans but I am not ok with snakes or spiders; not afraid of them, but I don't want them living in my house and am not really happy with feeding baby mice to anything. No problem with crickets or bugs...
Help! return of the pest w/ pics
how do they get into a nearly sealed chamber!? driving me crazy.....im not enthusiastic about repotting either since my echinostoma was comatose for almost 2 months. based off what i have read it seems to be a combination of aphids and fungus gnat larva. they...
Hey everyone!
I'm Jo. I live in central Florida and up until a few days ago, I never thought I'd possibly love a plant as much as I love my first carnivorous friend. (Don't get me wrong--I love all my plants--but this one is really something special!) I "adopted" a beautiful nepenthes alata...
Thought I was familiar with bugs but I'm seeing this for the first time. It was curled up in soil in an unplanted pot. Looks kinda like a pillbug but it's big, soft and squishy; just like a caterpillar. Burrows very fast.
Any ideas ?
Hi all,
I finally had the chance to get back out in the field to look for bugs with my camera. I posted a number of photos on my blog last night—this was my favourite. It’s always nice to see something enjoying a nice feast...

I'm a little leery about using bug killers and stuff, especially since I have some pet bugs and arthopods. So I got an idea to hang a flea and tick killing dog collar in my Highland Nepenthes grow area since they are exposed to constant incoming air from outside the chamber some insects seem to...
somehow a ladybug made it into my lowland terrarium. i decided to let it hang around tho....they are useful for killing bugs that eat nepenthes correct? well with any luck hopefully it will lay eggs. :)
OK folks, I have a terrarium that is about 3 feet by 2 feet by about 18 inches tall. The utrics and Drosera in there are all in live moss and were it not for the aphids that persist despite neem, soap/oil spray and total immersion in water for as long as 5 days... they and the D. prolifera...
i was watering the plants when i seen a small brown worm make a run for it when the light hit it.......looked like 1-2mm long..kinda skinny......also there are small bugs in the soil.....they are very small and white or silver in color....look like they may have wings but do not fly.
they dont...
With the exception of my nepenthes and small cp's that are either infants or infirmed; I have them all on the front porch...consisting of sundews, dionaea and sarracenia. Which if i had to guess i would say the sarracenia seem to attract the most insects.
I have seem some strange looking bugs...
its mostly aluminum foil and duct tape.

While watering my plants today, I had a sudden epiphany. (First I need to give some background info to make everything make sense.)
Honestly, my drosera collection is nothing to boast of, lol. (About 20 aliciae, drosera 'Marston Dragon', drosera dichotoma 'giant', a lot of capensis, some...
On Sunday, my wife & I headed out to a section of the Appalachian Trail that has some great woods & fantastic overlooks (one w/ ~300 degree vista). On the hike, we came across this beauty just as he/she was about to cross the trail. I'm not sure who was more startled ... :-O
Sadly, this...
I got this guy back in December 2011. Greenhouse hardened. Growing in 50/50 sphagnum/bark with thriving live green sphagnum growing around it. I'm assuming its seedgrown because of its size and the place I got it from doesn't do TC. This morph, according to the website I bought it from, is...
This 'Florida Giant' came to me healthy and I was thrilled that it quickly put on dew and was catching bugs. Now it's lost it's dew and the ends are starting to "crisp" just like my capensis! It's in 50/50 peat/sand sitting in distilled water, top watered a smidge daily, full sun. The...
I was looking at my plants 5 minutes ago and noticed these small bugs that kind of remind of scale on my heliamphora.. they are much smaller than scale. After looking through all my plant since seeing them, all I found were four small ones.. all on the same heliamphora leaf... maybe I caught it...
Does anyone know what causes this? I have plenty of healthy flower stalks on all my pitcher plants, but I saw a few like this. I bring them in when there's a frost or freeze warning. Maybe I missed a night? Or could this be bugs of some sort? I did just find and spray for aphids. This...
