P. 'Aphrodite' by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Not sure what causes this blush every winter, but I like it...
P. gigantea by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
P. sp. Tonala "ANPA A" by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
P. sp. Tonala "ANPA A" by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Finally getting reverse crosses blooming; new:
P. emarginata x moranensis 'Huahuapan' by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And aged a little:

Full variation of the ANPA A x emarginata flowers I've had so far:

And I've finally got the reverse to bloom too:

P. laueana

Sooon! (Please excuse my terrible background, I pulled it out of my terrarium to give it a little spritz of foliar fertilizer)

Damn, I wish mine was blooming...the "ANPA A" is blooming all over the place and I'm dying to cross it with laueana. P. gigantea usually prepares to bloom at this time too.

  • #145
I wish ANY of the rest of mine were blooming. I think P. laueana and P. "libelulita" would make a cool hybrid, but no dice. But hey, if you want to make a trip down to Longmont with ANPA A you're welcome to the laueana pollen!

  • #146
I think a trip that far just to nab pollen would be a bit much...though I have gone and stored what "ANPA A" has produced. Should gigantea or laueana bloom here, there will be a hybrid. And I'll have to remember to do the same in reverse if I can't be lucky enough to push them to bloom simultaneously.
Speaking of gigantea hybrids though:
P. emarginata x gigantea by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And the other parent which simply can't be beat either

Also fun tiny things in bloom again

Dang those are great! Love the tiny droplets on P. lusitanica.

P. laueana flower

It's here! And another bud on the way.

So many primroses...and just on time, the first flowers are showing up now
P. primuliflora by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And getting more glorious blooms from these guys; sadly, I think my attempt crossing with stored "ANPA A" pollen didn't take...

Top flower is the original plant, bottom two are from pullings; they each have massive lower lobes compared to the top, far more frilly, and either washed out or bled out vein colors. Several flowers each have remained the same, so I don't know if I have suddenly developed a new pair of strains, or if it's just an odd environmental thing
P. emarginata by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And it's nearly spring again...
P. primuliflora by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Also have something I've been waiting a long time on developing...along the lines of what madam Harris posted earlier in the thread...

'Nice primuliflora shot. They really do look like a primrose flower as the scientific name says.

  • #153
I have been wanting to grow some pings for a while, do you know of any that would thrive outside during the summer in zone 6b?

  • #154
I don't grow them outside nor am I in that zone, so I could not make recommendations. Potentially the temperate and warm-temperate species, but it's dependent on what your high temperatures are and how tolerant the species are.

Starting to be able to restock the seed stores for this one again...
P. pumila "Hardin Co. TX" by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And propagation has begun for separate clones of these
P. emarginata x gigantea Clone A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
With Clone B showing off its first flower finally too

A constant full bouquet is in this pot now
P. emarginata by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
P. 'Aphrodite' by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And I finally seem to have found a sweet spot for this species!
P. vulgaris by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Though the first bloom is mutated and missing a lobe

And a load of caerulea blooms are on the way too

Photo dump because I'm cataloging pics for different clones...
P. emarginata x gigantea Clone A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
P. emarginata x gigantea Clone B by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
P. emarginata x gigantea Clone C by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
P. emarginata x gigantea Clone D by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And, had the first clone of this new cross finally flower for me!
P. moranensis 'Huahuapan' x sp. Tonala "ANPA A" Clone A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
There'll be a better photo of this flower later on; also, the first clone of the reverse cross has also recently opened, and while this is nice, that bloom smokes it

P. moranensis 'Huahuapan' by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
P. emarginata by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Finally had this clone make a proper flower (and then it went right back to another 4-petaled bloom)
P. moranensis 'Huahuapan' x emarginata Clone A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
P. moranensis 'Huahuapan' x emarginata Clone B by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
This is probably my favorite of this cross
P. moranensis 'Huahuapan' x emarginata Clone C by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
P. moranensis 'Huahuapan' x emarginata Clone D by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Interestingly the reverse cross is a lot paler, and more bled out with the colors
P. emarginata x moranensis 'Huahuapan' Clone A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Particularly this cool looking Clone b

P. sp. Tonala "ANPA A" x emarginata Clone B by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
P. sp. Tonala "ANPA A" x emarginata Clone C by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
This was, tentatively, Clone D, until a plant that had bloomed before that I've been waiting on gave me another flower and proved itself superior.
P. sp. Tonala "ANPA A" x emarginata by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
P. esseriana x gigantea Clone A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr

More photos coming...

This cross has gigantea's trait of sticky both sides of the leaves, quite strongly
P. esseriana x gigantea Clone B by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
P. esseriana x gigantea Clone C by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Can't wait for these to bloom...and see what that gold color does in crosses
