A most unusual pair of clones this is; bicolor petals, but with the color fading in an almost mottled, stained look that has never stuck around in any other plant I've seen so far, and veins from emarginata only just barely sticking in the background color
P. emarginata x moranensis 'Huahapan' Clone A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
This second one especially, is far paler than I expected from either parent
P. emarginata x moranensis 'Huahapan' Clone B by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Also getting cyclosecta blooming again! This flower failed after pollination was attempted (though the pollen from it did make 2 successful crosses with other plants), but a 2nd bloom is looking more promising now
P. cyclosecta "Yucca do 1714" by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
P. moranensis 'Huahuapan' x esseriana Clone B by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And esseriana is finally looking decent again

Beautiful flowers. Love the variety of the crosses. Loving the esserianas.

  • #164
'Nice shot of the cyclosecta and flower. This is certainly one of my faves.

  • #165
Turns out cyclosecta doesn't like setting seeds though...crosses with it as the pollen parent are fine, but all its stalks just wilt after the flower falls.

P. sp. Tonala "ANPA A" x moranensis 'Huahuapan' Clone B by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Got a moctezumae flower! It's not perfect, but hey...and, crossed it both ways with emarginata, and it lasted long enough that I was able to put pollen on cyclosecta (we'll see if this stalk holds on or not...) and "ANPA A." Can't wait to see the results...
P. moctezumae by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr

It also made a couple bifurcated leaves.

And, some new arrivals from the start of the week, all with so much potential
P. acuminata by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
P. gypsicola "Buena Vista" by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Mystery freebie dude; label said gigantea, obviously not. I suspect another gypsicola...

Expanding the borders on the Ping collection
P. laxifolia by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
This one is slowly dying back to the bulb, but not there yet
P. macrophylla by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And these arrived as bulbs (as did more recently heterophylla and medusina). Hopefully they make it through to waking up, a few of the outer leaves on one turned black for no obvious reason.
P. parvifolia by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Also got this in as gracilis, turned out to be a hybrid...so also recently got the actual gracilis in

Funky extra petal in the middle of this guy's flower

P. emarginata x gigantea Clone D by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
I think this is the best flower of the cross...

P. immaculata by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Arrived with a developing flower bud...
P. immaculata by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And lucky me, it finished developing!

Ever seen a plantlet form on a Pinguicula root?
Pinguicula root plantlet? by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Flowers coming back
P. 'Aphrodite' by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Or brand new blooms coming in:

P. gigantea x emarginata Clone A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
This one was particularly exciting
P. crassifolia by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And it is so PINK! And I have attempted crossing it with laueana, and used pollen on moctezumae and emarginata

So none of the P. crassifolia crosses seem to have taken...will have to hope for another shot next year. I have a ton of other crosses sprouting already though and barely have any room for them, so...
Also, pretty sure I'm going to have to register one of the plants in the photo below as a cultivar, as it looks completely unlike any of its siblings or the reverse cross. Guess which one?

P. rotundiflora by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr

Pretty sure I'm getting seeds off this thing again this year too

Sadly, don't think my crosses with this worked out...but at least I cam home in time to see both flowers open
P. gracilis by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Also have this weedy little thing going nuts with flowers again...and atwell over an inch across, also I think my biggest ever lusitanica rosette

Also once again have seeds on the way of these guys:

And for the first time ever...flowers on lutea!
P. lutea by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
This was the first flower on the first plant; second plant's bloom is in the Plant of the Month thread. And, this flower...gave me seeds! And a ton of them.

Only just waking up, but beginning to live up to its name now:
P. macrophylla by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Also releasing some new hybrids very shortly...
P. sp. Tonala "ANPA A" x moctezumae by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr

A hybrid I think would be cool if they could line up blooms: macrophylla x heterophylla

Separated out my "keeper" plants of this cross...still far too many extras in the original pot though
P. sp. Tonala "ANPA A" x moctezumae by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And got a funky flower on this guy this year

A new bulb has already formed so I don't think any flowers will be on the way, sadly, but macrophylla lived up to its name
P. macrophylla by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr

  • #178
That P. macrophylla looks good, what media do you use?

  • #179
Perlite, blasting abrasive, bit of peat; same as the rest, nothing special. Just watching water levels differently on each (but the macro has been wet for a while and doesn't seem to care).

  • #180
Repotting these guys, might finally soon have enough to ret rid of some...
P. primuliflora "white flower, Blackwater River St. Pk. FL" by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And finally selecting out indiivduals of some of my seed-grown crosses to establish as my "keeper" clones...surely obvious why this one was picked, and I really hope it stays stable like this:
P. laueana x gigantea B by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And, butterworts turn red in UV, and it seems gigantea hybrids in particular get very red
P. laueana x gigantea A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And moranensis hybrids
