I just dumped a pot because it got covered with a mix of mold and algae and some other green c@#&. It looked like this but 100x worse, with dark green dry patches and fluffy white mold everywhere:
It was one of my first pots and I did not wash and microwave the peat : perlite mix that it...
The plant has been repotted into a bigger pot with 50:50 individually washed and microwaved silica sand : peat mix. But for some reason I decided to add a top layer of coarse sand (~1cm). Now I'm wondering if it was a good idea...
Man, the n00b blunders again.
I'm whipping up a new batch of media. I decided to do it right this time after screwing up first by not rinsing anything, second by adding vermiculite. Now I'm doing it right: 3 parts peat, a little less than 1 part perlite, a little more than 2 parts sand. First I...
So I've just begun this new 10 gallon vertical vivarium, Still working on the plantings obviously!
Some of the first plants:
N. belli x thorelii x aristolochioides this is a rooted cutting so I can see it's the perfect diameter for this tank , not too big.
This miniature fern is...
This is my first success with any kind of orchid. I've been wanting this one for about 5 years. I just got a couple this past Christmas. Thanks to some expert advice from the grower, The Wild Orchid Company, I have blooms! :)
H. radiata has too many common names to keep up with. It's called...
N. hamata basal isn't rooting. It's rotting, right?
Pings were starting to decay in old soggy media.
My new ping media mix I'm trying is 2 perlite, 1 pouzzolane (crushed lava rock), 1 fine sand, 1 coarse sand, 1 calcareous clay, 1 LFS.
New Ping setup..
P. moctezumea...
I'm excited and I'm hoping I'm doing it right...I potted this guy up in about 2/3 lfs, 1/3 coarse orchid bark with a couple strands lfs running the length of the tap root (just straight down without any side roots..dunno if that's how they grow or if they got broken off during shipping). He's...
Just thought I'd post a pic of the Ceph I got last month, so here it is.....
So far it seems to be doing pretty good. I'm not thrilled with the soil it came in since it seems a bit dense (looks like half peat, half coarse sand) but since it seems to be doing well I've been reluctant to...
Hi all,
Thought I'd post a couple of pics of my Darlingtonia, just recently put into it's winter dormancy.
This Cobra was obtained back in 2007, and it has successfully gone through two winter dormancies, and is now entering it's third with me. I grow it in the basement under a 42 watt...
Here is a photo of the Catopsis berteroniana, just out of the bag, that I received from Wistuba yesterday. It is potted up into a solo mix of coarse perlite. The plant is still small, standing only about a couple of inches tall.
The title 'Lamparas de la selva' is the common South American...
A guy who works in Garden bought a bunch of broken bags of paver sand for the paltry price of $.58. So I asked him about what went into that sand. Was it treated with chemicals? How coarse is it? Apparently, it's ground up concrete, which I think is alkaline. That might be good for the Mexican...
I saw a small pot of Lithops at Lowes today and couldn't pass up a pot of two for a couple bucks.
I've had a two other sets before about 10+ yrs ago. I managed to keep one for a yr or better and it actually bloomed for me.
Where I always seem to go wrong is winter care and watering.
These are...
i would like to start by saying i found this on www.thegardenhelper.com . this is not my work, it is that of the person who posted this on the site mentionned above. I thought it is EXTREMELY INFORMATIVE and makes defining easy by using plain old english, and not technical terms!
Please, ENJOY...
Yes. Clay. I love this stuff. I have noticed that in pots where I use 50% arcillite, 25% LFS, and 25% bark & charcoal as the medium, with a 1/4th inch top dressing of Sphagnum, I can have near-instantaneous drainage , however, it has been my experience that it does not dry out any faster than...
I was at my local nursery looking at some LFS, soil, and plants and I see this very nice looking N.Gentle in a 8" hanging pot it looks very healthy with around 4 pitchers and a few small ones comming my question is a N.Gentle a good Nepenthes for starters and is $33 a good price for this kind...
Edit: I'm not going to attempt growing from seeds since you all say not to start that way - I don't want to wait another 3 years for my first functional VFT. I'm going to buy a couple from "adnedarn" later on instead. Post below is otherwise unedited...
Research Growing Epiphytic Utrics
Hi all,
I've been looking around for epiphytic utrics for a while now. Epiphytic utrics are apparently difficult to grow. In the wild they grow on mossy rock faces with “bare peat and sphagnum” , shaded by trunks and branches. Water dries up...
Hi guys,
Remember my blunder? Here you go:
Presenting N.talangensis. I love the pitcher though....sooo cute. The cutest nep pitchers I have ever seen in person. :D Its like a tiy funnel.
the pitcher is around 2 inches in size from top to bottom.
I potted it in sphag + some fine...
Has anyone used Quikrete All Purpose Sand as part of their CP media mix? The Quikrete website says it is coarse sand and one of the listed uses is mixing with potting soil. Is there something better that may be available? I can't seem to find a place here that sells "horticultural" sand.

Male and female. The male isn't very masculine, but male nonetheless!
Taken from Wikipedia:
These stones have been termed "living stones" due to their own energy field and ability to "die." In a solid form, these stones have a hardness of 7.0. Boji® stones come in two types, male and female...
