Hey guys it has occured to me that my VFT's in Sphagnum moss and doing much better than my VFT's in Peat/Sand mixture. Is there a key concept I am missing here? I thought Sphagnum was a no no for planting VFT's in? Help would be apprecaited.

I've never heard of Sphagnum being bad for VFT. But I heard about long fibered not being good. My VFT is doing fine in pure milled sphagnum. Problem is I can't find any sphagnum in any of the hardware/garden shops, I have to get mine from ********************.

i found my shredded canadian spagnum peatmoss at wal-mart... thats what i was told to get...they have been doing fine in it... i think it has more acid that the regular stuff.... and the traps like acid.... anyways... peace

Live moss is a good medium, and I always use this in my mix. It provides good aniseptic conditions, its airy qualities are good for oxygenation, the evaporation rate cools the plants, and the low Ph is ideal for this genus. Some attention is needed to keep the long fibered moss from growing over the plants, but this is not too difficult.

wallyisawalrus, "canadian spagnum peatmoss" is still peat moss. The word sphagnum is usually in all peat moss bags so you can tell it apart from the sedge peat garbage. The sphagnum N.Gracilis is talking about I think is milled sphagnum, which is like dried long fibered sphagnum crumbled up into tiny tiny pieces.

Yes I am talking about Sphagnum moss. You know, the medium Nepenthes and Sarracenia are commonly planted in. And Peat is WAY to dense for a VFT but if they are doing OK in it then just hope for no root rot.

wallyisawalrus, I hope you have some sand or perlite in the mix of your VFT. If you do not plan on adding anything to the mix then I recommend that you do not keep it on the tray method to prevent it from rotting.
