I honestly hate photos like that; I like individual plants that look pretty, the grow areas are never good-looking and I'm dying to get everything outside. Pitchers are opening with no color when some should be deep red and purple, so I'm not happy where they're at.

  • #124
We all know the feeling of tripping over our collection as we prep them for this that or the other. Your right, they tend to be less photogenic where they grow best. You have a lot more than most, but It's good to see that these challenges don't go away. That even you, with your vast success with a broad spectrum of plants, still toils over floorspace.

I got a pair of new AF plants recently...that were apparently in really humid conditions at their last place as they've dropped all the old pitchers they had:
S. minor var. minor f. viridescens by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
S. minor var. minor f. viridescens by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
S. psittacina var. psittacina f. viridescens by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And for a brief period earlier this month the plants were OUTSIDE for a full week plus:
Plants outside by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Then we got snow again, and they've been back inside until literally today, as we've got another warm stretch. Another frost predicted in about 9 days though; I pray it's wrong so I don't have to cover them or move them all again, but it's Colorado, I'm not confident.
Some of the plants have been making some funky things thanks to the basement-then-outside-in-moderately-cold-weather regime

One of my darkest plants...and I crossed this bloom with 'Adrian Slack' because I must...
S. "Queen of the Night" by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
S. 'Plum' x 'Snowflake' Clone A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
S. 'Red Sumatra' OP Clone A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Also grabbed a different psittacina to hopefully in the future cross with my ICPS seeds in strat right now for really healthy offspring.
S. psittacina var. psittacina by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Every new feature on this cross, I am in love; the lids are massive (one of the flowers I crossed with another massive-lidded plant in hopes of exaggerating that trait), pitchers ridiculously skinny by comparison most of the time, the developing seedpod itself is crimson in color, and the umbrella stigma flushes rich red too
S. flava rubricorpora x 'Adrian Slack' Clone A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
S. 'Leah Wilkerson' by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
'Leah' is one of the few plants that gave me color in the pitchers from being outside, rather than just getting sunburnt
S. 'Leah Wilkerson' by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And this is the only plant that shows no impact from sunburn, just nice pitchers
S. flava "Cinnamon Tube" x 'Adrian Slack' (?) Clone A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Best red flower:

And a few more flower pics to discuss shortly so this post doesn't go over the photo limit that's here now...

Beautiful flowers from a pudgy plant that grows fast and I hope makes some odd offspring
S. (x swaniana x 'Scarlet Belle' ) x oreophila by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
S. 'Rococo' x 'Wilkerson's Red' Clone A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
One of the oddest flowers I've gotten yet; fully colored, they are this gorgeous pale salmon pinkish color with a slight yellow flush around the edges. Crossed with 'Leah Wilkerson' and I think flava ornata "Improved Black Veins"
S. 'Night Sky' x 'Adrian Slack' Clone A by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
And one of the few flowers so far that I've had that actually smell nice
S. alabamensis ssp. alabamensis by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
This one is another of the oddest I've got, and I love it. The pitchers are dark too, and the petals started out more of a solid red, but they've aged into this flame-colored appearance.

I am concerned about whether or not my division of flava "Improved Black Veins (MW)" will actually establish and grow...but if not, I at least was able to get a small bit of pollen off it, and among other things crossed it with this lovely flower:

These might be the last nice photos I really have for a month...because about 3 days ago we had about 6 inches of rain within an hour and hail came with it that shredded up the tops of most of the pitchers

At least most of the pollinated flowers are relatively undamaged (or at least the ovaries, the important part)

Also, it's been pretty much confirmed that this plant (though it may not look the color part this year since it's been an odd year for it), is the same as 'Waccamaw', so I've switched over the label

Particularly disappointed, as every pitcher on this glorious plant was shredded, knocked over, or in some manner damaged, when it started out as a pot full of a dozen plus perfectly colored traps

Thanks to harvesting the pods before they actually turn brown, not only have I harvested quite a few crosses with fully developed seeds (and some absolutely amazing potential hybrids among them), but I've also managed to already have two crosses growing on and pitchering now because doing so let me find the early risers that decided to germinate in the pod before they dried out

Some rare new things getting close to filling out the full taxonomic chart...

As well as the more normal traps. Not fully colored though, as everything gorged on insects too fast and the tops withered...never got to see the pure red-lid alatas at full flare until just recently either, and only the little traps that couldn't eat as much
