Seeds were soaked overnight in RO purified water with a "touch" of dish soap (touch the film of soap on the spout of soap container, touch the surface of the water) then cold stratified on barely damp paper towels for four weeks. Seeds sown 02/25/07 on finely chopped LFS (dust from bottom of bag) over peat/perlite.

S. flava - seed coats split, radicle about the same length as the seed
S. alata - seed coats split, radicle just emerging from the coat.
S. rubra - nothing yet.

Congratulations on your new seedlings. I think it is very rewarding growing Sarrs from seed and watching them develop. Good start!

Woohoo! Second batch of Sarr germinations. Stratified in damp NZS. Planted 03/24/07 on fine layer of finely chopped LFS over 1/1 sand/perlite mix. ~12 days germination.

S. rubra ssp alabamensis
S. rubra ssp jonesii
S. leucophylla "Hurricane Creek White"
S. purpurea ssp venosa - didn't notice any

12 days? Sweet.. That beats my 16 days on my S. moorei "Big Red" seeds.. I got a total of 13 sprouts so far out of 20 seeds sown.

Good luck with your new babies,
Steve

I am in the process of trying what I a call a "cold mud experiment. I filled various plastic cups with media and rainwater and poured the seeds on top. They have been in the cold attic, uncovered, for the past few months. I replenish the water as necessary. Eventually, I expect winter to go away and hopefully between the warmer temps and increased photoperiod, I will actually get germination. So far, I have gotten 2 P. grandifloras to germinate in this manner... and that's it!
