NASC auction is OPEN!!

s. purpurea ssp. purpurea x s. purpurea ssp. venosa "Brunswick Beauty"

I thought I would share these photos. Back in 2008 I obtained seed on the board with this cross s. purpurea ssp. purpurea x s. purpurea ssp. venosa "Brunswick Beauty". I'm not sure if he's still here, but I had several grow from the seed. Unfortunately they are all smooshed into this little pot and I'm going to have to carefully separate them. There is a lot of nice dark color from the "Brunswick Beauty" that showed in most of the seedlings.

The direct image links are broken.

If you want them to display on the forum and still retain the links to your photo gallery, use this code instead.

Edit: Scratch that...the "code" tag isn't working for some reason. I've posted it below if you're interested; replace all parenthesis with square brackets.

Beautiful plants. Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks Veronis for fixing the links. I was wondering why they weren't showing up. The photos are all of the same pot of plants. The first photo has the most accurate color as there was no extra light from overhead on it.

Very nice! Time to repot maybe? :)

Purps are the easiest Sarrs to repot and clean up IMO. I literally peel off the dead leaves like peeling a banana and they come off perfectly never leaving stumps like other sarrs do.

*Takes off glasses * Wow...those are some dark purps! Looks like they've also kept their genes too!

Do you think you will be gathering seed from them?

Yup - I'm still around :-O Wow - thanks for sharing pics of the plants. It's pretty amazing how much of the "Brunswick Beauty' coloration has been retained from seed. I always have trouble truly capturing just how dark the plants actually are - the camera likes to lighten them.

I don't think you'll have any problems separating them - Sarrs are amazingly resilient (& now is a good time to do it).

Congratulations on some nice plants! It's always great to see what the seeds turn into.

I am using New Zealand sphagnum moss for all my plants. They're in a 4 inch pot so they're not all that big.

I can see if I get seed if the venosa flowers at the same time, but I think they're going to miss each other and I don't have anything else that's suitable to cross to keep it dark.

I just finished separating them and there were so many tiny ones in there that were not getting any light. I'm sure they'll be much happier now and may darken up like their larger sibling. They were easy to separate too as you guys suggested.

Here's a photo of them separated. And another photo comparing Sarracenia purpurea ssp. venosa on the left to the Sarrancenia purpurea ssp. purpurea x Sarrancenia purpurea ssp venosa ‘Brunswick Beauty’ on the right. The venosa of course is much older.

Thanks for the comments, JoAnn

JoAnn - Very nice plant you have there. I might be able to send you some pollen from a really nice dark red popei. Judging by the size of your flower bud in the photo, they are very close in age. It's supposed to be close to 80 degrees this weekend so mine might be open soon. PM me if you're interested.

Those are REALLY awesome.
I've decided to stick to S.purpurea & hybrids for Sarrs--I live in MI, so the cold tolerance is important!
Might have to get some of these someday. :)
