I've collected water from my roof. The shingles have been up for years and years and years and years... It feel through a crack in the eaves trough... I collected it, put it through a coffee filter to rid it of chunks. Is it safe this way? What if i collected it from a pool of water in an upturned boat in my backyard?

The rain water off of the roof should be fine, the boat is a little more iffy, it depends on what else is in the boat, metal fittings, lead paint, old fish bones, etc.

I agree with greencrunch...

As I avoid telling people to collect water off the roof, you are at least running it through a filter, so you are pulling some stuff out.

The better way would be to sit something in the middle of the yard and have nothing else get in it.
