Plant of the Month January 2015

1. Only ONE (1) Plant per member may be entered in any particular month. This means one Nepenthes vine, one Sarracenia Rhizome, one pygmy dew etc.
2. All pictures must be taken in the month of entry into the contest.
3. All entries must be clearly identified.
4. Entries are restricted to cultivated plants.
5. Contestants may post as many times and as many pictures of their entry as they like until contest closing on 01/31/15
6. Sequential pictures showing opening of a pitcher, unfurling of a leaf etc. are fine as long as all pictures are taken within the month of the contest.
7. If, for some reason, a single pitcher/plant/whatnot cannot be isolated and a group shot is necessary, then the particular pitcher/plant/whatnot entered must be clearly identified in your post.
8. Plant must have been grown by owner at least six months prior to photo, or sprouted from seed by the owner.
9. I didn't like this rule. You can keep entering the same thing month after month and if people still like it without getting sick of it, so be it.
10. Times of Contest and Poll openings and closings are to be understood as EST.
11. Judging by forum members and guests in a poll opening on 02/01/15, closing 02/05/15 and using this forum in this thread! Voting will appear at the top of the thread at the close of the contest entries.

I like your photo very much. It is a very nice image, showing your plant very clearly.

I was just wondering, if you're totally certain it is Drosera admirabilis. It looks much more like Drosera aliciae, to me. Have you been able to check the flower structures, for diagnostic characteristics, when it's in bloom?

I've attached links to the names above. Some that I've selected using the CP Photofinder, that are truly representative of their respective species. To me, even some of the images listed there for one species appear to be the other (apparently these two are often confused with each other). For me, Drosera admirabilis has a very abbreviated (short) petiole, so the lamina (trapping part of the leaf surface), begins immediately adjacent to the crown of the growing plant. It is reminiscent, to me, of what a giant Drosera brevifolia, might look like. Though Drosera admirabilis rarely, if ever, develop the dark red coloration that Drosera brevifolia can. They can both be very weedy species, with seeds copiously produced and distributed, so that it is easy for weedy seedlings to get everywhere. Thus, younger specimens can easily be mistaken for each other, and even other closely related species.

GAH...Life got crazy with starting a new job and all and I totally forgot I even posted a pic for Plant of the month. I'll confess I've been on a mini-hiatus. I sincerely apologize for not getting back to you on this. I'm thrilled that my photo won and I'm quite speechless.

When I purchased it, it was sold to me as D. admirabilis. I've not yet seen it in bloom. I also have D. aliciae so I'll need to look at the both of them and maybe post some pics on my thread for comparison. I'll have to look into this, thank you.

Edit: @Joseph Clemens - I've been doing a lot of research since reading your post, including visiting the vendor's website from which I purchased the plant. The sample photo the vendor uses clearly looks to me like D. admirabilis w/ the abbreviated petioles...But I do see your point about how mine are elongated and have dark red coloration. It was quite small when I received it so perhaps it was mislabeled? I'll keep an eye out for when it flowers to be able to tell for sure. PM me if you'd like and I can share the pic/info from where I purchased it.
