Pest?

I was watering my plants this morning and also hoped that my near-death binata would come back to life. And so, while I was watering it, a bunch of white insect ran out of the soil and tried to escape. I attempted to kill them all by drowning them and they all started flying or jumping.

What on earth are those insects? Are they harmful?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Undoubtedly these are Springtails. They are detritivores (they eat dead stuff) and very rarely damage live plant tissue. (they can eat the roots of very small seedlings, but this is rare) Its unlikely that they will do your plants any harm. I wouldn't bother trying to discourage them if I were you.
