Wow congrats thag! Are these LL or HL truncata seeds?

Thanks potted plants and Heli. I don't know. I really wish I did. The person that I got them from said they didn't know. Something else I guess I'll have to wait and see then. Haha, congrats on the 1000th post and cool that it was a response to me. :D

unnnnngh.. so jealous.. truncatas are my favorite.

edit: double quadruple unnnnnnnggggh. Multiple people have baby truncatas.. gimme one!

Most likely LL truncata. Looking good, truncata is fairly slow species but given optimum conditions should move along nicely. Watch your moisture levels, don't want to be too wet now that they are growing, gradually start to wean them.

Thanks Crofthulhu. Well it will probably be two years before they are ready. I might trade with you one but that's a long time to wait. I'm sure someone else might have one to trade with you that's a safe size. :D

Nepenthes gracialis, it would be great if they were LL because those grow faster though I know all truncatas are slow. Oh, should I start to wean them off the humidity now? If you look at my first post they are in a divided tupper ware. What about the seeds in the compartment next door that haven't germinated yet? I don't know how I'd start to uncover them and leave the others covered. Any advice?

If you got them from the same person that i got mine from on the Big Island, his growing area is a relatively cool intermediate area so not full on LL.. ... Dunno it often has gotten me wondering about them as a friend on Maui has a huge one also growing in a mid elevation area and it is huge....

I have several seedling ventricosas germinated just over a year ago. Some are a couple inches wide now, which was faster than I expected. They can grow pretty quickly if potted up seperately and fertilized once they reach a more stable size (a cm or so wide for me).
Would love to get my hands on some more Nep seeds. I never knew growing them from seed could be so fun! It's satisfying watching them grow under your care from their inception for sure.
good luck with those :)

Rich, ventricosa grows pretty quick and truncata more slowly so it's probably going to take a little while longer for them to get a few inches. N. villosa takes forever though :0o:

Richjam, I know what you mean. I love raising and growing stuff. There's something special about doing it yourself. I also breed birds. Been hooked on that since the 90's. I LOVE ventricosas but don't have any. Would love to get some seeds of those.

Kula, don't both types of truncatas over lap in range? I think you can tell them apart visually. The lowland isn't as nice looking. But it will be a long time before I can tell with mine.

Since you are in that situation just standby for another week or so and see what happens. Nepenthes seed can be funny! Sometimes they germinate overnight almost and other times weeks on end until germination.

Yes, nep seed can germinate from nothing one day to tons the next, I spray mine every few days with distilled water and superthrive until they germinate. seems to help.

And BTW wow Nep Gracilis was here!

  • #34
Congrats Thag! I still have never germinated any Nepenthes seeds before.

  • #35
swords, whats up man, its been awhile huh?

Yes gracilis it has been a while since I seen you post. ;)

Hey! You're nice :) Mostly admiring, but I really should make a thread in the trading area. They look reeeally good though, and I can't wait for updates on these.. love seedling update threads. Especially on baby truncatas! :D

Understood. I'll make another update once they have some more interesting growth.

This is the oldest seedling. I just took it out and potted it in a tiny pot.

Oldest Truncata Seedling moved by Thagirion3, on Flickr

The media is 1 part peat 2 parts milled sphagnum 3 perlite top dressed with milled sphag and the substrate the seedling was on lifted right out with a spoon so as to not disturbe the roots. Spryed and bagged with distilled water and put under lights. I'm guessing leave it bagged one week perhaps then slowly make holes in the bag over time to acclimate it to room humidity? I've never raised baby nepenthes so if I'm doing anything wrong would like to know. Thanks. And yes first pitcher! Very excited.

BTW, that pot came in one of those little kids grow greenhouses for gourds. Would love to get more of those tiny pots but don't know where without buying more of these kits.
