D. intermedia 'Carolina Giant' seed germination

Logic tells me that being from the Carolinas, this ought need cold stratification. Can anyone confirm this?

I've had fresh D. intermedia seed germinate for me, but more came up that winter, too. All the instructions I've seen for this species say to do cold stratification, so I doubt it could hurt. Unless maybe it's the semi-tropical variety from Cuba.
