I just noticed that what little I have is sending up something that are either "spikes" or an appenadage like U. praelonga. Could anyone provide insight as to what it might be?

I have U. praelonga and unlike other terrestrial Utrics, it has two, green parts to its above ground anatomy - the usual oval shaped "leaves" and grass-like "leaves". What do the gasss-like parts do?

Last night, I sterilized some 50/50 peat/sand mix by microwaving it wet for 15 minutes. After it cooled, I filled a 72-cell plug tray (1.5" square cells) with this sterilised mix.
