Some kind of water beetle, maybe.
I saw something like that at the LFS..er..local fish store, once, amongst the feeder fish, and it freaked me out.

It's hard to tell from the pic, but some Utrics traps do turn black as they age.

Just saw you said U. gibba. I do not believe they turn black.

I was told that the black traps are captured prey I think.

There are mosquito larvae.... perhaps...
