you might also try fertilizing and watering a little heavier than normal, something high in P in late summer would be helpfull.

I got two of these today... Huernia zebratus and Duvallia compacta (sp?) They're great plants

don't notice any bad smells on the flowers though

Carralluma are also terrible, they smell like dirty feet. The flowers are about 1" across and pitch black but very numerous.

I have smelled carrion flowers so baaaaaad that you WISHED there was a rotting body near by to cover the stench!
