Trucks

Anyone here into trucks and performance after market parts? Well heres the deal pretty much what im getting at.

May be getting my grandfathers 1997 F150 XLT Lariat Supercab 4x4 Automatic 4.6L V8. It only has 18,000 miles on it (never driven) My question is, I plan to have a mechanic go through and check everything (primarily the valves/plugs/gaskets and seals) For performance, I planned to install a Cold Air induction kit, and a performance exhaust.

My goals:

1. sound like a truck not a little car (growl like a V8) magnaflow, and flowmaster suggested

2. have more "umph" like a V8 should have

3. cost effective

4. not too many parts for upgrading

My basic concerns are sound and performance. I have heard if you want loud sound go Flowmaster, if you want loud sound and performance go with Magnaflow exhausts.

The Cold air intake is probably going to be an Air Force 1 brand kit from Troyer Performance since that is is the same price as all the other top competitors and it yields the most improvement in HP and overall performance. (DYNO proven).

Well, let me know if there are any other motorheads out there!

Dustin

my solution............................lift up radiator cap and drive Chevy or Dodge under and reapply radiator cap

sorry....................had bad experiance with Ford though there were 5 model years between it and yours................the 4WD unit on ours was designed by a retarded monkey.........busted 2 front shifting forks in 6 months on ok gravel roads without alot of stress being applied to the 4WD system..........bunch of BS.............

Believe me Sheridan, I AM a Dodge man. But.....for a first truck, with only 18,000 on it, I think its a match until I can raise funds for a Dodge.

lol no problem was just giving yah crap....................with only 18,000 on it its prolly a good deal........our Ford F150 was a 2002...............couldnt get rid of it fast enough.......love our 2006 Chevy Silverado..........even though it lacks the ground clearance of the Dodges it does pretty well offroad........i couldnt get it stuck out mudbogging without really trying..........its SWEET on the highway....almost as good as my Impala for playing NASCAR on the passes......

in all actuality i prefer Jeeps to trucks though a 6 foot bed sure comes in handy on occation

another gripe about the new fords.....................half the freaking engine is under the firewall........i couldnt change the plugs on the SOB..................dang near couldnt change the oil.............the oil filter was up and above the front axel and an absolute B!$#% to get to...........with this new Chevy i can pop the hood look down and see ground, its rather nice..............course the '97 shouldnt have any of these problems as its still the older style.........

Use the edit button darn you! lol j/k

I know what you mean about the engine. Supposedly thats the way they are so you can put a V-10 into them if desired.

My oil is a breeze to change! The filter is under the driver side front bumper and the plug is a walk in the park to pull and drain.

There are plenty of go fast parts available for that motor...especially if it is the 32 valve version. I had one in my little Linclon Mark Vlll and had it up to 345 hp. That motor needs to breathe and a set of headers and larger throttle body will help a lot. A set of under drive pulleys frees up a lot of power.
The easiest horsepower per dollar bump is a chip from Super Chips in Florida. Easy to instal and you get a 10% hp increase.
They sound great with a good set of mufflers.

Hey bro, I too am a truck guy :) either flowmaster or magnaflow will give you good sound and performance. The flowermaster tends to have a tin ney sound... while the magnaflow seems to be a little bit deeper. I don't know if you're familiar with cardomain.com but here is my truck... Tax season was just here so it was time to do some stuff to it. :D
my truck's site (old pictures at top, new pictures/mods at the bottom...)

And to hear some videos I put together for my dakota/durango community as to what a magnaflow sounds like on these trucks... You can view them right here... (anyone with a dakota or durango feel free to join the forum... Lots of fun people and good information :) )

Andrew

P.S. I am a Chevy guy but bought this with the addition of kids because it has a HUGE back seat and can fit the rear facing car seats... Oddly enough, full size trucks (even the quad cab dodge) have small back seats which don't, or barely fit rear facing car seats ???....)

Ok...will someone explain to me why its GOOD for a truck (or car) to be LOUD?? ???

Some people get noticed by discovering a cure for a disease or by hitting the game winning shot. Others drive a loud truck.

Love the purrrrr of my magnaflows. I don't own a truck. Cold air intake and catback exhaust will make your truck sound like a bad!@$ mot!@#$%^ hehe

Nice sound, sounds just like my dads Ram 1500 2002. I think magnaflow would be a great choice for that low rumbleand the perfomance gains seem really good compared to Flowmasters.

Plantakiss- It is simple. I like th sound of a healthy motor. It's nothing to do with "get me noticed" (as bruce stated) that is the same reason I like my truck to look good. It isn't to show off.... It's because I take pride in my auto. If you care for the appearance, it is likely you'll care for it's internal health. You can't tell me you look at a dirty, rusted, beat up piece of crap and say "I bet that thing will run forever!!" As far as loud exhaust, when you have a larger motor, like a V-8 or some larger V-6s they get performance gains from louder exhaust by having less back pressure. Once it is easier to get air out, it is easier to get air in (that's the reason for after market exhaust and cold air intake at the same time) As far as resinators on 4cyl. that is to get noticed and be generally annoying IMHO. :)

Ooooooo-K. So...if my Jeep has a loud motor...that's a good thing? Is it good when a loud truck or car goes by my house and drowns out the sound of my TV?

PAK, i prefer to hear the sounds of my own thoughts and music while driving than to hear the engine interfering with them, myself. That’s all a loud truck engine is to me. Noise interference. Bah…

i'll assume that you're kidding and if not, the physics of it are simple. all engines, 3cyl, 4cyl, 5cyl, 6cyl, 8cyl, 10cyl, 12cyl, and yes, rotaries too, are air pumps. get air in and get air out, as fast and as efficiently as possible. every method of improving the volumetric efficiency of an engine is the same no matter the number of cylinders or total lack thereof.

now, not to threadjack... for increasing the performance of your 4.6l, i'd be willing to bet that a lot of the mustang parts will fit, so your options would be pretty much limitless. i'd just log onto www.summitracing.com and start looking around.

peace,
tech...

And no, I'm not kidding. I know you are into the little cars techno and that is fine. But 4cy do not need all the airflow or larger engines. And a "resonator" (just to be loudeR?) can't help performance. Why can't little cars get "performance" exhaust that doesn't sound like a lawnmower? I mean, their explosion is basically smaller... So why should the exhaust sound be more than say a big block Chevy? ???

Lets be clear Susan... There is open headder "loud" which has no reason for the street and is and unnecessary. Then there is performance exhaust which sounds good and opens up airflow. It is louder than stock... usually not too much louder except when you get into the throttle. And that is what most people have.

Oh and I have no problem hearing my stereo :D

edit: Why do motor cycles need to be so loud? They are louder than our cars and our trucks LOL
