Shrub needles as good as pine needles?

I assume that shrub needles (you know the bushes with the red berries) would be just as an effective topping as pine needles. Am I wrong?

Top dressing for what? A bog? A pot of sarracenia?

One reason people use pine needles is the acidic properties of pine if that's what you are going for.

I used pine needles, but juniper shrub needles will work was well. For a final dressing I use Hay.
