My house Nep (N. x ventrata)

adnedarn

I'm growing CPs in the Desert of Tucson, Az
Admin
I've never kept a CP as a house plant. I mean, I had a plant rack that was within my living space when I first started
grow rack

But never had a CP as a house plant. Some may remember this thread where I mentioned my wife brought a Nep home to me. I figured what the heck, may as well have it inside as they're intended and see how it does!
I started off just hanging it on the light fixture over the sink which faces NE.

By 4 months later it has put on some pretty good growth. I started using an aquaglobe to keep it watered. Seemed to do well with growth, but not many pitchers.

Come April 2020 it had vined so much away from the window that the pot was tilting from the weight and the vines were in your face/hair when at the sink. I didn't get a photo but it was time to transplant it... So it got a bigger pot! This is the plant in January but I didn't get a photo just before the transplant...

And the plant in the new pot with old pot for reference

n. x ventrata

Every night I would open the windows and put it on the kitchen table so it would catch the morning sun, then by lunchtime when the sun was gone I would move the plant to the hanger by the window

It was not pitchering using this method so I picked up a light and had it set up all silly (stacked dumbells to mount it too hahaha) to see if it worked (no photo for you!) but it did start pitchering... on the side with the light.

Sooo..... I adapted the light so rather than both lights being on one side, it looks little bit better in the living area and the light now comes onto the plant from two sides and some light from the 3rd and sometimes glare from the tile will reflect some light to the plant in the evening from the 4th side. :p (Don't mind the green screen, daughter is the S. Arizona president of Skills USA and uses that spot for her official meetings :) )

It's still too early to call it since
a) I keep wrapping the vines around the planter to keep them somewhat in the same area so hard to know if pitchers formed there or were wrapped there and
b) it's not been setup like this long enough yet. But looking at new pitchers inflating it sure seems to be working! This pitcher is still on the plant from when both lights were on one side by it sure seems happy to me. Going by the all red pitcher I also think the two lights on one side was over kill so I'm hopeful that the new configuration will work!

This is the light I'm test driving... https://amzn.to/2OKzRIy
I'd love to see anyone else's "house plant" CP that is at least trying to not be an eye sore. :-))

That's a beauty! I used to grow some Neps indoors. I'm hoping to do so again when I pick some up at the auction!
Congrats with the light! Glad it's working out. :)

'Looks great, Andrew! It really makes me want to try growing Nepenthes from my ceiling.

Still going strong!20210529_124603.jpg20210529_124638.jpg

Lovely!

Update time. :)

Still growing well and throwing out some pitchers but nothing consistent. I've also noticed some vine tips have died and nodes up the vine have activated. I think it either wants to be trimmed up, back into the light. Or I may need to add another light.

Your lighting should approximate a natural style of light for a climbing plant. That dude's getting big!

Whatcha mean natural style? Like a brighter single source? So much of it would be completely shadowed without that source traveling. I gave up trying to keep it twisted around the main plant hahaha
Speaking of, it definitely needs some cutting- you and across mentioned wanting to grow indoors.. you guys want some clips of this to try? It's already acclimated to indoor :p

I meant that you have the lights overhead so that there would be more around the top than the bottom, in the way a vining plant would likely have it in the wild. With indoor hanging plants it is easy to end up lighting them more at the bottom. And, yes, I'd take a cutting!

Adnedarn, in a few months, you posts will be like this:

"Update time for my house nep! It's vines are starting to grow out of the house a little bit."

I'll accept that. I don't think it'll hurt the house as much as ivy or other typical outdoor house vines do. ;)

That is definitely a ventrata I got one in the same exact hanging basket for 20 bucks at Lowes in Florida and took it on the plane with me back to nyc lol..

This thing is still getting crazy 🤪 some vine tips further from the light have died activating nodes up by the lights.

@bluemax send me your address and I'll ship your cuttings next week. @Acro Did you win stuff in the auction to grow inside? If you don't have this and want some clips also, send me your address! (Late trick or treats! )

I really appreciate it! I don't grow any carnivores in the house at large at this point but it would certainly be fun.

Still growing well and still pitchering less than I'd like (but the ones it does put out are decent). I also see a number of tips dying but then start growing again. I'm thinking a plant of this size needs more light (or a severe haircut).

Thoroughly decent pitchers. I see that it is time to ween the plants I now have to lower humidity so they can live by the front door.
