N. Macrophylla BE with an inflating tendril... poor guy got bit by mites so its first leaf is a little wonky. The next leaf should look better. Good thing I caught the rascals just in time.

<a href="http://s1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd495/Lance_Plater/?action=view&current=DSC_0420.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd495/Lance_Plater/DSC_0420.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

nice update lance!!!! its such a nice feeling getting back from a trip and seeing not only have your plants not suffered or perished, they have progressed!

why the :/ with the new hamata pitcher?

  • #24
Yeah ikr? Scares me every time no matter how much I prepare.

The :/ with the hamata pitcher is because the hamata opens up at least one pitcher every 10 days so there's quite a lot of them to take pics of.

  • #25
lol and thats a problem? :p

my hamata is still a baby and only puts one out every few weeks.

  • #26
Awesome plants and great grow chamber you got there :-D Love your jamban

  • #27
You feed the plants coffee???

Is there an article about this somewhere or could you explain the hows and whys of it?? I've never heard of feeding the plants coffee.

  • #28
As far as I know there's no article on this yet, its just been spread around by word. Either the acidity of the coffee adds more PH to the soil which helps the Nepenthes, or micronutrients contained in the coffee are absorbed by the plants roots. I've noticed huge gains in leaf sizes from 2 inches to 8 inches as well as an increased speed in the plant it self. All you need is some very dark rich coffee to pour on the soil with and then wash the soil out a few days later with water. The affects usually start taking place the second leaf after the coffee treatment.

  • #29
Great plants, Lance. You really scored with that BE macrophylla.

  • #30
Nice job on the dubia seedling. A third seedling came up for me today as well.

  • #31
Not sure if I ever gave you the locale for the ascendens, so here it is for your records:

D. ascendens (Serra de Ponta Grossa, Campo Largo, Parana, Brazil)

You say dark coffee? Darker roasts typically have less caffiene and the darker the roast, the less the caffiene. I wonder if this plays a part in it.

I may have to give this a try some day.

N. raffelsiana X Trusmadiensis!!! I can't wait to see these mature!

Updates!! Everything has started to explode with new growth ever since a vent was installed to raise the temp drop even more! Not many opened pitchers yet, but a lot of tendrils showing promise.

N. Raffelsisna brunei X Trusmadiensis with a little more coloring.

<a href="http://s1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd495/Lance_Plater/?action=view&current=DSC_0456.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd495/Lance_Plater/DSC_0456.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

N. Robcantleyi with the next pitcher snuggling itself into the moss. Seems to really like doing that.

<a href="http://s1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd495/Lance_Plater/?action=view&current=DSC_0483.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd495/Lance_Plater/DSC_0483.jpg" border="0" alt="N. Robcantleyi tendril"></a>

N. Spathulata tendril test.. either it likes to wrap around things, or bury itself in the soil. Lets see.

<a href="http://s1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd495/Lance_Plater/?action=view&current=DSC_0478.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd495/Lance_Plater/DSC_0478.jpg" border="0" alt="N. Spathulata female tendril test"></a>

Nice plants, Lance. Looks like your cutting from Noa arrived very nicely.

Gorgeous neps! How do you light and cool your highlands?

  • #37
Thanks! Yeah, it was packed with good care :).

Gorgeous neps! How do you light and cool your highlands?

Thanks! The HLers are naturally cooled since they are in an un-heated garage where the temps get nearly as cold as the outside helps do at night. Still, the temps this year have worked me so I decided to hook up a vent that sucks in the 50s*F air from outside at night. So far, it's been doing pretty well. I'm not completely with the whole lighting systems thing. All I know is that they are standard lights and there longer then 24' in length. The plants don't seem to mind, although I may install some different spectrums in the winter when all the Highlanders are growing in "full speed ahead" mode. That should be interesting.

Update! I've been pretty busy with work in general so I was only able to go snap a few pictures. Hopefully time will allow me to go take even more ;).
