EASTERN INDIGO SNAKE POSITION
Job Title: Director of Land Management
Job Type: Full-time permanent position

OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION
Project Orianne: The Indigo Snake Initiative is looking to hire a dedicated conservation
professional to direct our land management efforts and to assist the Executive Director in
achieving the organization’s conservation objectives. This position is approximately 30%
developing management plans and working with partners on broader management issues
and 70% on the ground restoration and management of EASTERN INDIGO SNAKE
(Drymarchon couperi) habitats.
BACKGROUND
Project Orianne: The Indigo Snake Initiative is a conservation organization dedicated to the
range wide conservation of EASTERN INDIGO SNAKES and the longleaf pine ecosystems
they inhabit. We achieve this by working with a diverse group of partners to protect and
manage land, re-establish populations that have been extirpated, and by conducting and
facilitating research, inventory, and monitoring efforts.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Land Management Specialist will develop and implement restoration and management
plans on preserves owned and/or managed by Project Orianne Ltd. including restoring
longleaf pine forest and native ground cover, and planning and conducting prescribed
fires. In addition, the Land Management Specialist will work on broader restoration and
management efforts across the historic range of the EASTERN INDIGO SNAKE, working with
a diverse group of partners. Specific responsibilities include: 1) developing restoration and
management plans; 2) writing proposals for grants in support of restoration and land
management activities; 3) implementing longleaf pine restoration and ground cover
restoration, 4) fill role of Fire Management Officer (FMO) (i.e. write fire management plans
for all Project Orianne managed lands, write prescribed burn plans for all associated
management units, fill role of burn boss during the execution of all associated prescribed
fires, fill role of Incident Commander during all wildfire suppression activities on Project
Orianne managed lands, provide appropriate National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG)
training opportunities to all staff participating in prescribed fire activities, and develop
mutually supportive relationships with both local and regional fire management entities; 5)
implementation of invasive non-native species management program including wild hog
management; 6) in coordination with other staff, the writing and reviewing of documents
and scientific papers; 7) assisting the Executive Director in land protection activities as
required; 8) managing project budgets; 9) working closely with teams of conservation
scientists and practitioners; 10) giving presentations; 11) organizing meetings and
workshops; and 12) serving as a resource for reporters, filmmakers and others.
QUALIFICATIONS
M.S. in science-related field (e.g., Conservation Planning, Range Management, Forestry, or
Fire Ecology) and 2 years experience in land management or equivalent combination of
education and experience. Exceptional individuals with B.S. degree and experience are
encouraged to apply.
Certified as a Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 or a willingness to receive training to
become certified.
Experience in managing complex or multiple projects, including finances and coordinating
the work of other professionals and partners.
Demonstrated experience communicating to multiple audiences (both technical and non-
technical) with strong verbal, written, and graphical communication skills.
Sound ecological knowledge of species, natural communities, ecosystems, fire ecology and
conservation needs. Expertise in longleaf pine ecosystem restoration is a plus.
Proficiency in managing multiple tasks under challenging time constraints is necessary.
National and potentially international travel is expected.
Experience with collaborations and/or coalitions.
A strong interest in Project Orianne’s mission.
Exceptional interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and
working in a highly organized manner.
Computer competency, including use of word processing, email, and spreadsheets
(knowledge of GIS software preferred).
Experience using heavy equipment and hand tools including any additional skills; such as
small engine repair, welding, basic building construction, are considered a plus.
COMPENSATION
This is a full-time permanent position. The pay range is $45,000 to $55,000, depending
on experience. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, retirement, and an annual
bonus (based on merit).
