Everglades City

I might have two extra nights in Florida after an early June conference in Tampa/St. Pete. I have no interest in the mouse's house and am thinking about renting a car and going down to Everglades City. I'll be by myself, so I don't plan to wade off into Fakahatchee Strand or anything. There's only one Ozzy and I'm not him. But I'd like to at least walk the boardwalk in the park and do other light exploring and general hanging out. Has anyone ever been there and is it a good home base?
