Do helis need the drastic drop in nighttime temps or not?

Hi! I’ve been caring for a H. Minor and H. Minor x Heterodoxa for a few months now and they’ve been fine without the temperature drop but my understanding is that these are “lowland” Helis and can put up with these conditions. I want to branch out into different Helis but don’t know how well I’d be able to replicate those 50* drops in temperature. I mean, my house gets rather cold in the winter because we all hate the heater and try to keep it on only as necessary but the problem comes in the summer. Also, I’m building my terrarium from 6mm polycarbonate (it’s what I had on hand) so there’s quite a bit of insulation which is a bit disadvantageous for letting the cold from my house into the terrarium in the winters.

I keep watching all these videos/reading posts of people successfully growing helis outside of a terrarium in ambient temps/humidity and it’s making my head spin because I’m pretty sure one of those videos was from the ICPS. There have also been plenty of reliable sources on the opposite end of that spectrum, so which is it? And if cooling is necessary, how do I achieve this in a 24x24x18 inch terrarium? Thanks in advance!

They sure don't! I'm betting the ICPS video you saw was by @Werdna who also made this post (and the video is linked in) Andrew's guide to growing Heliamphora in the desert I have been to his house and seen his set up. There is no trickery! I tried quite a few times and failed growing Heliamphora trying to replicate complicated growing conditions. Andrew gave me a tiny plant to grow using his method, which I just recently divided up into a ton of divisions (18 I think) and I've picked up many many more helis since then which have been all acclimated to my ambiant room conditions.
I recently posted some photos to this thread of my plants (including the one I just chopped up) Give Away For Active Members - Wistuba import giveaway
Hope that helps!

That was probably my ICPS video you saw. Here’s a few pics of my open air setup from today. Helis dont need big night temp drops like highland neps, they do fine with temps constantly in the 70s, with peaks in the low 80s.

Totally thought no one had replied to me because I didn’t get an email notification, but thank you so much for getting back! These are really helpful resources!

Those are some gorgeous helis 😍 and yes, I believe it was your video. I forgot that this forum doesn’t send email alerts when you get replies so I thought no one had replied and spent the week scouring the internet for parts to build a completely DIY highland terrarium 😅. Considering I also want to grow highland neps (and I already purchased all the materials), I have to go through with it. I would imagine that it wouldn’t hurt the plants to replicate their native habitat right? As in, it’s possible to grow them in ambient temps/humidity, but they would thrive more (or at least to the same degree) in my highland terrarium, correct?

Yes they should be okay in a highland terrarium as well, but will want more light than most neps.
