World Cup!

Don't like to gloat or anything but I can't say I'm too displeased that the US didn't get past the group stage. The reason? The US coaches comments before the tournament started that Australia didn't deserve to be in the World Cup because they are not good enough.

Yeah, that.

I think we all knew how that was going to turn out. It seemed like the Japanese defense was terrible. The keeper was good, but when you've got a good striking team like Brazil constantly barraging you, there's only so long you can hang on. The forwards were OK, but with a defense like that, there's no hope.

Quote[/b] ]As if all that wasn't bad enough, Ghana gets a penalty kick in stoppage time of the first half today that gave them the lead, and ultimately the win.

While the US's play was less than impressive, I have to say that there is something very wrong with Ghana passing on. Bad calls, and then the 2nd half Ghana just plays turtle the whole time.

What has gotten to me is the way that so many teams are just playing for a tie. It's great to accept that a tie may be the outcome and to be proud of yourself for getting a tie if you were up against a tought team, but I'd like to see the enthusiasm of teams (even the young ones) playing to win!

I was proud with the way Germany played its last game, and I hope that they play as well on tomorrow's game! That last game was good for morale, and a definite curse-breaker! I'd love to see Germany win this one, and if they keep up the good play, it's possible- they've finally got some young players again!

Anyone else feel bad about so many people making fun of Ronaldo?

He had more goals in one game than the US had in three and weighs 189 lbs.  So he clearly is fat and not ready to play.  I don't mean to defend jocks, who tend to be as pampered and self-absorbed as Paris Hilton, but it amazes me when people whose biggest exertion is lifting their butt out of a chair say an athlete is out of shape.

Snap! Lol.
I had not heard that, but I don't blame you for feeling that way.
I don't understand that comment. How does a team get in that does not deserve to? You have to spend a lot of time qualifying , right?
I am a typical American not up on this stuff, but people keep telling me the US was ranked fifth in the world and the Czech Republic was second. So how did they end up in the same group(ironically, both are out)? Seems like you would take the top eight seeds and make them each the highest in one of the eight groups.

Cheers,

Joe

They're redoing the entire ranking system. As it stands, it's VERY easy for certain countries to move up, and VERY difficult for others. For instance the US gets to play countries like Jamaica while a country in Europe has to face the big dogs. I think it's a shame that the Czech Republic didn't move on, they ran in to some bad luck.

Wooh! I'm glad Germany just won its game. I have to give some major kudos to the Swedish keeper, though.

Looking forward to the Mexico v Argentina game coming up. Everybody thinkgs Argentina is going to win (and they very well may!) but I think it'll be an interesting game to see. Gotta watch the competition Germany has coming up.

Nice game today. I guess I'll resort to cheering for Australia since I did live there for 9 years...and Poland is out....

Ho-ly crap! Did anyone else just watch the Portugal v Netherlands game? BEST worst game EVER.

The England game today was truely boring... And the Portual game was pretty poorly played, but it got insane at the end! We saw some pretty dark records set this game. Saw some punching, kicking, throwing, pushing. Dang.

Yup.. I saw the whole ugly mess. I can't believe how bad the officials are in this tournament. 16 yellow cards and 4 reds.. 9 cards to Portugal.. all either set or tied world cup records. I thought that Jorge Larrionda was a bad ref but Valentin Ivanov sure did his best to prove that NOBODY is worse than him.

Well that takes out my other team.. dont really care who wins now. I just hope that the rest of the games are not like this one.

Good for England. Portugal have 2 suspended players, including Deco.

The commentators were saying the exact same thing as you, but I have to strongly disagree. The players are really who're at fault. The plants (namely the Portuguese) started the game with a bunch of fouls. The ref can't NOT call them. If people continue to offend, the ref has to continue to get cards. Here's an idea if you don't want to get a card: don't foul on other players from behind, don't hit other players in dispute, don't grab shirts, don't argue with the ref.

The players were unruley (it all started with Portugal.) If people make an offence where a card is warranted, then they should expect a card. All the ref could have done is given fouls instead of cards, and I don't see that alleviating the problem. I think the ref needs some sort of other power, like sending players out for a set time so they can "cool off," anything, really.

But I just don't see how you can blame it on the ref in this last game. The Italy v US game is another story, those were bad calls.

Well I really wonder who is the real culprit here. Did you know that FIFA suspended Mastroeni THREE GAMES for that red card he got in game 2!!? Weather it be FIFA or the refs themselves, it really makes for some crappy soccer if you ask me.

Trouble really is that you never know what the ref is going to call..  I have seen plenty of fouls go uncalled..  even today I saw a guy get kicked in the face and no foul was called. Minutes later a guy gets a yellow card cause the guy running beside him tripped over his own big feet. With 5 officials on the field, and all of them wired with radio communication, there is absolutely no reason why this obscene officiating should be continuing.

I must admit that I missed a good portion of the first half today, so I will take your word for it about Portugal's play. What I did see of the game did not impress me about the officials in the least..  All I saw was a ref who was throwing cards out like he was auditioning for a dealers job in a Vegas casino.

I know what you're saying- it's frustrating to see things go uncalled because a ref didn't see it. HELLO FIFA, we're not in the stone age any more! I'd rather see replays used to make calls than see blatant fouls and goals-that-should-be go uncalled. I understand that refs need to maintain authority, but sometimes it comes at too high of a price.

With the way that the game went, I don't think the number of cards brought out was very unreasonable. There was pushing and shouting and hitting. I could have sworn I was watching a baseball game. It was just a bad game all around.

Replays are disruptive in American football, in which play is stopped most of the time anyway.  How can they possibly work in soccer?

  • #36
It really sucks that Korea lost to Sweden or Switzerland or something by 2-0.

My fellow Korean friends were crying.

Well, the idea isn't to look at footage of every foul. In the time that it takes to settle everyone down after a goal-in-question, a ref, anyone at that, could view the footage. Let refs keep the offsides calls and things like that because otherwise play would become disrupted; one of soccers charms is that it's an intense game requiring not only agility, but endurance as well. Stopping the game for every could would kill the game, that much is obvious.

There are far too many penalties being called.  These are big boys...professionals...let them "play ball".

I predict an all American final...Brasil vs Argentina...with Brasil the eventual winner.

In our office sweepstake I drew Argentina to score the most goals of the tournament. Looking good so far!

Boo for the game that took place about an hour ago.

This is why I'd like to see some form of replays used. A grossly unfair pentaly kick was awarded to the Italians in the last 5 some seconds of stoppage time, giving them the win. Absolutely ridiculous.

Furthermore, officiating was bad again; I'd like to see more fouls given instead of cards!
