Are they flattened and mostly horizontal, Jim? If so I would say they almost look like seed-leaves (cotyledons) but that doesn't answer the question of 'why?'

They seem almost like flower or seed pods. Maybe cut one open and see whats inside?

On that latest pic I'd say aerial roots. It's a Mangrove Drosera

I have on occasion seen these aerial roots on some of my capes, usually plants where the soil has sunk way down in the pot.
