Washing dirt

So I've been rinsing my sand and peat in preperation to do some repotting, and I've been (of course) going through distilled water like crazy doing it.
Is it okay to rinse in tap water until the water runs clear, and then give it one or two times with distilled?

Why are you rinsing the peat?

I rinse sand before using it. I use tap water until it runs clear, then use rainwater to remove the tap water.
