Vanda Cherry Blossom 'Santa Cruz Sunset'

Very nice! Is it fragrant? I have a few neofinetia (now vanda) hybrids that are wonderful variants of fragrance compared to the neo parent.

Love those orchids that reward you for ignoring them!

It has a very light fragrance. I didn't even notice it until a couple years ago.

That's really nice.

I wasn't drawn to Vandas back in the days when I had a lot of orchids, but I did have a Neofinitia falcata, which was cute and with a terrific fragrance. I think, but am not positive, that it was in a tree fern pot. It bloomed regularly but I think I traded it or gave away because it didn't do as well as I would have liked.

I also had a different popular small-growing species (its name escapes me) that I think was also part of the Vandaceous tribe, even if not the genus. That one had orange flowers and did real well growing bare-root in the smallest wooden basket basket, even with with challenging dry indoor air of winter.

I love the look of orchids, Tillandsias, etc. that thrive without pots, potting mixes, etc.

Your second one sounds like V. ampullacea, which is the other species besides the falcata that's in this hybrid.

Thanks - that species name led me to the genus name that I knew way back then: Ascocentrum, which apparently has been absorbed into Vanda in the ~25 years since. That's too bad: I like the name Ascocentrum.

I don't know if I had an ampullaceum, though, because the ampullaceum photos I see online tend towards purple flowers. Mine was orange ... maybe it was a miniatum, not that orchid colors are diagnostic. Either way, it was a terrific plant and really cool in or out of bloom.
