tall leaves or short, clusters of leaves

Which would be a better choice to buy? A plant that has a couple of leaves standing tall or maybe more, or a plant which has many leaves that are short, and lying on the soil? The store I'm thinking of buying mine from has some healthy plants and I was wondering if certain leaves would do better than others.

Typically- the shorter compact growth means the plants are dormant. While the tall growth is summer growth. I'm not sure one would be "better" than another.. but I would go with the one with more compact growth and many leaves. These will likely be ready to divide quicker (or be multiple plants already) than a plant with a few tall leaves

Bear in mind, growth habit isn't related to vigour.

Some plants stay rosetted all year and some are upright all year. Others are rosetted in spring and upright in summer.
