Spines

It is normal for a Devil Claw seed pod to have 3 rows of spines? The Seed Pod that is starting to shed its skin has 3 rows of spines. What could those of 2 set of spines be used for like to make sure the seed pod stays attached to a horse hoof or what? Just wondering.

it could have many diferent usages in my head at least i do not have the plant but i hare read about it.......

The ones Joosa is growing has four spines. It probably depends on the species/form/variety/subspecies.
