Sowing seeds?

I should be getting some VFT seeds tomarrow and I will be putting them under my grow lights. I have these questions. What is the minimal soil depth and how long should I keep them under the light. Last time I tried seeds I started them by my window and they grew but in the spring I took them outside and they died. I think they just burned and being so young they just died. I'm either going to put them on peat moss and sand or just on some New Zealand LFS. If I do the LFS then the depth is only going to be about a inch and a half.

I would try the peat and sand. Just lay them on the top of the soil and cover the container with some plastic wrap. Stick them under the lights pretty close to it. Heat, humidity and long days (12+ hours) will get you started off.
