Solar System Loses a Planet

Pluto gets the boot

Pluto no longer a planet, say astronomers

Thursday, August 24, 2006; Posted: 10:27 a.m. EDT (14:27 GMT)

GUE, Czech Republic (AP) -- Leading astronomers declared Thursday that Pluto is no longer a planet under historic new guidelines that downsize the solar system from nine planets to eight.

After a tumultuous week of clashing over the essence of the cosmos, the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of the planetary status it has held since its discovery in 1930. The new definition of what is -- and isn't -- a planet fills a centuries-old black hole for scientists who have labored since Copernicus without one.

Although astronomers applauded after the vote, Jocelyn Bell Burnell -- a specialist in neutron stars from Northern Ireland who oversaw the proceedings -- urged those who might be "quite disappointed" to look on the bright side.

I grew up with Pluto.

How in the world you can throw away PLUTO but keep Uranus...I'll never know.

Better solution would be to rename Uranus Pluto and ditch Uranus.

You mean to tell me that you grew up without Uranus? -I won't ask for details. (sorry, thought we could use one more pun)

Pluto was always sort of out there. I think I'd probably rather drop pluto than make every celestial body out there a planet. I have yet to look, but hopefully the article includes the definition which they concluded upon. Tell us oh great article- what is a planet?!

That's right. Thanks to "scientific progress" Micky Mouse had to go to the vet today to get his faithful dog put down. ;-;

Something about this quote made me want to dip in to the ol' /b/ folder:

Well, suposedly since Pluto isn't large enough to have its own gravitational field and its orbit around the sun depends on neptune, then its not considered a planit. I think the idea stinks, but hey thats progress and when new information is given and examined then things change. Pluto is half the size of our moon, so really it probably shouldn't have been given planet status to begin with. I guess those 3 extra bodies they found out beyond pluto are also considered Icy dwarfs too. The report I just saw on TV didn;t say anything about them.

it's now a drarf planet, and the others are now considered dward.

we now have 8 planetrs and 4 dwarf planets.

Anything with mass has its own gravitational field.

In fact, Pluto has not just one moon, but at least three.

This gave me a laugh...almost as bad as the scientology thread:

Pluto Loses Designation, Sues IAU

In a move that surprised many legal observers, one of Pluto's leading public-interest groups yesterday sued the International Astronomical Union after the IAU declassified Pluto as one of the nine "classical" planets that circles the Sun. It is not yet known where venue for the case ultimately will be placed or precisely which judge eventually will hear the case.

"The IAU isn't the end-all, be-all for the solar system," said a public relations spokesperson for Pluto, appearing on CNN's Larry King Show. "You can't just un-designate a planet without giving folks on the planet an opportunity for due process, and the right to be heard, and to challenge the facts upon which the decision is based." The complaint alleges that the IAU violated key provisions of the Administrative Procedure Act, federal constitutional law, and certain Plutonian legal principles that are too complicated to set forth here.

"We reject the downgrade from classical planet to 'dwarf planet'," the Plutonian flak told King. "We have a right to self-identity, to call ourselves whatever we want to call ourselves and not allow some pointy-headed scientists on Earth to label us. We feel confident that a jury on Earth or on Pluto or on any other planet will see through the IAU's discrimination and in the end give us celestial justice." Apparently, Pluto has contacted Mark Geragos to see if he will take the case.

Hope you liked it...

For some reason you have fascination with Uranus.
