sell by and expired by

i got cottage cheese that i bought and it wrote sell by august 1st. does that mean it expires august 1st? or just that they should sell by august first.

DONT eat it! it means they want to sell it by then, and things usually last a week or two after that. i would say dont eat it.

I won't do anything dairy after about 2 days past its expire date.

Eh, even if it's a sell by, it's been almost two weeks by now.

If you're cautious, toss it.
If you're cautiously optimistic, open it and try.
If you're a true optimist, open that sucker and chug it.
If you're a jerk, make a sibling/parent/spouse try it first.

The right choice for you, only you can decide. Hopefully though, someone else can help you to make your way to the bathroom.

with dairy products if it smells fine it generally is......least thats what i go by........course ive been told ive got a cast iron gut

I have a sensitive nose, but milk always smells spoiled as hell to me about a week before expiration...which is when I usually have to throw it out.

Yeah I know, milk always smells so gross. Especially the kind in those paper box jug things.

the cheese smells fine. taste somewhat similar too.... a bit chunky though...
