question for those w/ drosophila cultures

Hi, anyone who has experience culturing flightless drosophila melanogaster:

What has been your experience when normal (able to fly) flies are introduced? How quickly does the trait spread? I ask because I haven't touched my culture for a few weeks, and when I opened the mess today to start a new one, a few flies aimed for my head, but the rest were hopping around merrily like always.

I had thought that the lifespan was short enough that more flies would have acquired the dominant trait over the close to three-week period, but since I rarely used this culture at all, is it at all likely that it's a chance back-mutation?

Related question: Can the wingless flies be similarly reverted to normal?

If noone has any ideas, but can direct me to another forum / specific people, etc, that would also be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
