Proboscidea and Ibicella

I will be stuck at home for the next couple of months so I bought some seeds to germinate and grow. They arrived today.

P. parviflora

They both smell horrible. Be careful not to touch them when they get more mature, the glue/slime they make is hard to remove...

The seeds were sown on 27th June. I noticed that 3 days later, one of the Proboscidea seeds turned yellow. Its seed coat was cut with a scalpel while with the rest, I used my finger nails after realising the covering was soft enough.

Interestingly, it is the first to germinate last night!

cool! Hopefully you'll have some roridula sprouts soon too!

Maybe the yellowing was the result of chloroplast development?

Yup, Joosa. I sowed them on top of the soil. But they were in a covered box.

I thought we were supposed to cover them in shallow media. But then again, nobody's doing that in nature, right?

I took a sniff at the seedlings just now. Ibicella smells mildly like the zoo. Surprisingly, Probosidea smells less stinky although the seedling is older.

The Proboscidea is 10" tall while the Ibicella is only 6".

That's a very colorful flower, I should give one of these a try next year outside. I'd rather not get the stench indoors

The plants are indoors, at my balcony. But the Proboscidea doesn't smell bad even when I took the close shots of the flower. Maybe because the humidity here is very high, above 65% all the time. Ibicella...well, I'll update again when the flowers open. LMAO
