Would a primuliflora be a decent first Ping for a novice grower?

Yes; it's the easiest of the warm-temperate American species and the one found in most garden centers when pings show up. However, even better beginner species (so long as you can get some perlite or Turface, even pumice) are many of the Mexican Pinguicula, particularly moranensis and hybrids.

-primuliflora is very easier you can grow them just in wet sphagnum also

-hybrids mexican also like x 'Sethos- x 'Tina' these one are very easier to find in garden center

-some temperate also ( if you have the possibility to have) because you can ,all the year, leave those outside.

you live in what town ? have you a garden?

Savannah Georgia, no garden, just a grow light and a room that gets to 72 degrees in winter and up to 82 degrees in summer.
