What you are seeing is just a top dressing of calci-sand. The roots are actually in multipurpose compost with added John Innes. I use this compost/soil mix for all my Mexican Pings and they grow really fast.
I don't think that you use the same terminology in the US as here. As far as I can tell multipurpose compost is called potting mix, which primarily consists of peat, perlite, vermiculite and nutrients. John Innes is a loam based mix, as described HERE and I think might be called potting soil there?
