How do you water it? The rock doesn't act like a sponge or something does it?

yeah, the rock acts as a sponge.
it sits in a water tray with about 1/4" of water.

i wonder how the plants that like bone dry conditions like gypsicola(not so much the bulb ones...) would do on that for the winter growth.
