Jeff has told me that he uses 50/50 gypsum-sand mixes for his gypsum pings (sorry to answer for you, Jeff!). I read in Fernando's postcards that P. heterophylla has been in oak-forest areas, so I wondering if they can be grown in a mix that has a bit more organic material in it (the top layer of soil in these forests seems to be a peaty-substance).

not only, mostly on gypsum cliffs, these are rock-dwelling.
the problem with peat is moisture
in dormancy , these gypsicole plants including those with onion, must be completely dry to avoid rotting.For me a mineral substrate is always more adequate in this case for the perenity.
