Dyflam, I had the same problem with a few of my neps. I think it was a fungal infection, because it cause the stems to rot. I saved them by snipping off the un-infected portions and treating them as cuttings. You may want to go this route.....Of try a systemic fungicide if it's not too late.
It would help if you would describe the conditions under which you are cultivating your plants, along with the specific species which are not doing well (and those, if any, which are doing well). Also, you might mention how long you've had them, and if they ever grew well for you at all.
