My Aloe (?)

I've had this plant for a couple years, and I bought it in Arizona, when it was fairly small.

It's now with my other plants, and is starting to get... big!
I think that I need to cut it, somehow. My plan was to cut off four, or five inches off the top. But my concern would be for the bottom part, already in soil. Would this work? Would both sections live?

Any help is greatly appreciated
