Howdy from Southern California

Founder, Carnivorous Plant Resource & collecto.rs
Howdy folks - I haven't properly introduced myself, yet. My name's David, and I've been growing carnivorous plants for almost 30 years. I'm the owner of Carnivorous Plant Resource, and recently launched collecto.rs, a growlist and collection-tracking web application.

I primarily grow Sarracenia, but have a collection of Nepenthes, Dionaea, Drosera, some Cephalotus, etc. I enjoy the occasional bromeliad and orchid, but I'd consider myself a rookie there. I love breeding Sarracenia - always felt like it was a fun mix of art, science, and chance. I've been breeding and growing long enough to have gotten pretty lucky with self-bred plants. It's always so satisfying to grow your own crosses from seed and enjoy the results.

So, howdy! Hope to mingle a bit with you all, do some learning, some knowledge sharing, and enjoy the hobby together.

:welcome: Things have been kind of slow here but it is a wonderful site with a good community. 'Hope you enjoy yourself.

Hello David, welcome! Your sarrs look fantastic. I think I actually got one that originated from you during the SCCPE meeting in December. Just repotted it recently.

Welcome David, congratulations for collecto.rs, I use it and really like it! Hope you have a good time here! 🌱
Hey Mark, thanks for the kind words, and so glad you're enjoying collecto.rs! You've got a great looking collection ( Collecto.rs )! I'm excited for some of the fun features we're building at this moment. Please reach out with any feedback or feature requests you may have!

Nice! I do frequently sell at SCCPE meetups, so it definitely could be one of mine. Did you repot it in pure long fiber sphagnum moss? I hope it blasts off for you this season!

I used lfsm only for top dressing and for the holes in the pot on the bottom, most of the media is just peat and perlite. I unfortunately had it tip over and fall a month ago during a windy night when it was in a smaller pot. Despite a few ripped leaves at the rhizome, it seems to have recovered well. Definitely one hardy plant!

Nice to officially meet you, David. Love the plant tracker website, even if I am slow as heck at adding my plants.

Impressed by the sarracenia breeding. I have found my seed growing (and making) to be a bit frustrating. Maybe one day I'll give it another try.

Thanks so much for the kind words, and nice to meet you too! What's your username on the platform? I want to checkout what you grow!

I'm not a gambler in the traditional sense, but with breeding, I love the prolonged, drawn-out excitement of hitting the jackpot with a beautiful new plant.

Welcome! Are you in a wetter or drier part of Ca? What mix do you use for your Sarrs? I've grown Sarrs in my GH in S. Arizona for many years but recently have been doing some outside. They did fantastic in the test huge pot, but in smaller pots (than that) they either need another year to acclimate or may want a slightly different mix.

There's a wet part of CA? Ha! I'm in Orange County, so on the drier side, but by no means a desert. I have too many Sarrs to fuss over exact substrate ratios, so I keep it simple by eyeballing a 50:50 mix of perlite and peat moss.
Smaller pots have less buffer to temperature because there's a smaller volume of substrate and water to heat and cool. Darker-colored pots also get significantly hotter in direct sun. Maybe your smaller pots are getting too toasty in the AZ sun?

You know, humid and stuff...closer to the ocean :p
I use the same mix. I started off with a decent shade cloth, considering the same as your statement above and to just stress them less than the trial run bog.
I actually was kinda considering too shaded lol. I really dont think its pot temp since a) if I drain the large test pot, the water was quite toasty and they did fine. And b) all the small pots (3.5"square x 6" tall) are all packed together, so surely act as one mass, to a degree.
