fine tuning

Having spent some of the time travelling and trekking in nearby hills and mountains i witnessed neps of same species often show slight variation in shapes and colors in different locality. An example N. edwardsiana found on Mt.Trus Madi are slightly different in shape from those found on Mt.Kinabalu,Lowii in Mt Trus Madi (2,462m)also differentiate in colors and shape from Mt.Murud(2,650m)

The lowland temperature and humidity is different as one move inlands and the differences will be greater at night. It will be even greater around hills and mountains as clouds descent due to condensation. Thus providing all the plants with the requirements.Inland tends to get more rain than places nearer the coast,as least in places around Borneo.

Having said that if we can trace the origin of the clone's parentage fine tuning their growth requirement as per their native habitats will enhance their colors and shapes. Post you comment.

Posted here 2 images - inland/lowland hills landscape. It was foggy at first but as the sun rises, the warm dissipate the fogs. This is a typical northiana's habitat,Bau limestone hill.

A typical highland scene in the morning. One of veitchii's habitats,Borneo highlands. The low clouds formation camouflage the hills and mountain.

Great pics, Robert!! That's an amazingly beautiful place, you're lucky!

I wonder if the difference in plant appearance among the locations is more due to the same plant being in different conditions or due to the individual strains that have adapted to each location.

Thanks for the response.

Capslock,it's a constant puzzle. It can be either or both.Maybe the cells of nepenthes are not stable and easily influenced by environmental factors. Taking one example if say growing brocholli in France or anywhere in Eurpoe will be no difference in colors & appearance as planting in the highlands of Sabah, where many temperate vegetables can be grown due to the cool weather. Brocholli is still brocholli

What amazing locations! It's so cool to see where Nepenthes actually grow.
